MG India Set to Introduce Baojun Yep Electric SUV

MG Motors, a prominent player in the Indian electric vehicle market, is preparing to introduce the Baojun Yep electric SUV to India under its own brand. The SUV, originally unveiled in China, showcases a retro-themed design and shares the Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform with the MG Comet.

Recently, MG’s parent company, SAIC, filed a design patent for the Yep in India, hinting at its imminent arrival in the country. This article explores the key features and specifications of the Baojun Yep and its expected launch date in India.

Design Features of Baojun Yep

The Baojun Yep electric SUV, set to be rebranded as an MG EV for the Indian market, retains most of its design elements from the China-spec model. The only apparent changes would be the addition of MG badges at the front and rear. Like its sibling, the MG Comet, the Yep boasts a 3-door layout and can comfortably accommodate four passengers.

The design highlights include square LED headlights, a robust bumper, plastic cladding on the lower body, roof rails, bulky wheel arches, and a simple yet elegant rear-end design. Similar to the Comet, the Yep also features an asymmetrical window design, and the Chinese model offers an optional LCD screen on the tailgate for personalized messages.

Dimensions

The Baojun Yep measures 3,381mm in length, 1,685mm in width, and 1,721mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,110mm. Compared to the MG Comet, the Yep is 407mm longer, 180mm wider, 81mm taller, and boasts a 100mm longer wheelbase.

Powertrain and Battery Details

The Yep electric SUV comes equipped with a single electric motor on the rear axle, generating 68hp and 140Nm of torque, with a top speed limited to 100kph. Power is supplied by a 28.1kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery, delivering a range of up to 303km (CLTC). It is worth noting that the India-spec model could differ in its powertrain specifications due to the utilization of locally sourced battery packs, as seen with the MG Comet EV.

Expected Launch and Naming in India

Sources indicate that the introduction of the Baojun Yep in India will commence after MG India secures its second round of investment, dedicated to financing the second plant in Halol, Gujarat. The launch is anticipated in 2025, with the vehicle facing limited direct rivals in its segment.

However, it is expected to compete with offerings like the Citroen eC3 in the Indian electric vehicle market. While the official name of the compact electric SUV for the Indian market remains undisclosed, it is expected to command a premium over the MG Comet EV. Nevertheless, MG’s ongoing efforts in localizing the Comet EV’s production should result in a reasonably competitive price for the rebranded Baojun Yep in India.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Baojun Yep electric SUV by MG India represents a significant step towards expanding its electric vehicle portfolio in the country. With the design patent filed and plans set in motion, Indian consumers can anticipate a retro-themed, tech-savvy, and environmentally friendly SUV in the coming years. As the electric vehicle market gains momentum in India, the Baojun Yep’s arrival is likely to further drive the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions while offering a compelling choice for eco-conscious consumers.
