With the year almost halfway through, the automotive market has already seen several exciting launches, including the new Maruti Swift, the updated Mahindra XUV 3OO, the BYD Seal, and the Hyundai Creta N Line. As we move into the second half of the year, a new wave of SUVs is set to hit the market. Here’s a comprehensive look at the upcoming SUV launches to keep an eye on for the remainder of 2024.
Tata Nexon iCNG
Revolutionary CNG Variant
Expected to be the first to arrive is the Tata Nexon iCNG, India’s first CNG car featuring a turbocharged engine. Showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, this model has been frequently spotted testing on Indian roads. The Nexon iCNG will incorporate Tata’s dual-cylinder technology, similar to that used in the Punch CNG, Tiago CNG, and Tigor CNG. While the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine’s power and torque will slightly reduce when paired with CNG, the inclusion of an automatic gearbox could be a game-changer.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door
Expanded Versatility and Comfort
Scheduled for a mid-year launch, the Mahindra Thar 5-door, possibly named Thar Armada, promises enhanced features over its 3-door counterpart. It will boast 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a larger infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, and an electric sunroof. The Thar 5-door will carry forward the 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines with both 4WD and 2WD options. Additionally, an entry-level model with a 1.5-litre diesel and RWD configuration will be introduced to offer a competitively priced alternative.
Tata Curvv EV
A Sleek Electric Entry
Following its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, the Tata Curvv EV is expected to launch around September. Built on the same platform as the Nexon but significantly longer, the Curvv EV will feature a unique SUV-coupe design. Expected to offer a range between 450-500km, this model aims to stand out in the growing midsize electric SUV segment, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Creta EV and Maruti eVX.
Hyundai Alcazar Facelift
Enhanced Features and Design
Anticipated for a September-October release, the Hyundai Alcazar facelift will follow the design language of the new Creta while retaining its distinct features. It will include a revamped dashboard with two connected digital displays, ADAS, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Engine options will remain the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol (160hp) and 1.5-litre diesel (115hp) engines, available with both manual and automatic transmissions.
Citroen Basalt
Stylish SUV-Coupe
The Citroen Basalt, revealed in March, is an SUV-coupe expected to share its engine with other Citroen models: a 110hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit. This model will feature a distinctive sloping roofline and a redesigned rear quarter, setting it apart from the C3 Aircross. Better equipped than its predecessors, the Basalt is part of Citroen’s C-Cubed program.
Citroen eC3 Aircross
Electric Versatility
The Citroen eC3 Aircross, an electric version of the C3 Aircross SUV, will share most of its exterior and interior with its ICE counterpart. However, it will feature a larger battery to better accommodate its size. This model’s launch has been delayed to ensure the powertrain meets the vehicle’s needs, maintaining the practicality of the C3 Aircross with added electric efficiency.
Hyundai Creta EV
Anticipated Electric Launch
The Hyundai Creta EV is set to debut later this year, with a market release expected in early 2025. Featuring a 45kWh battery pack similar to the Kona EV, the Creta EV is expected to offer a range of around 250km. Spy shots suggest slight exterior and interior design modifications from the ICE version, enhancing its appeal as an electric vehicle.
Mahindra XUV.e8
Advanced Electric SUV
Mahindra’s first of a new generation of electric SUVs, the XUV.e8, is slated for a late-year launch. Based on the INGLO born-electric architecture, this 7-seat SUV will mirror the XUV700 in many aspects. It will feature an all-wheel-drive system and offer battery packs up to 80kWh, with power outputs ranging from 230hp to over 350hp. The XUV.e8 represents Mahindra’s foray into advanced electric mobility.
These upcoming SUVs promise to bring a mix of innovation, technology, and enhanced driving experiences to the market. Keep an eye out for these launches as they make their way to showrooms later this year.
