Land Rover Defender lineup Rejigged in India

The Land Rover Defender lineup in India has been streamlined, now offering just two engine options across seven variants. The V8 and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains have been discontinued. Despite this, the Defender remains available in all three body styles: the 90, 110, and 130.

Revised Pricing and Engine Options
Prices for the Land Rover Defender now range between ₹1.04 crore and ₹1.57 crore. Previously, the pricing spanned from ₹92.70 lakh to ₹2.85 crore (ex-showroom). With the updated lineup, the Defender is now powered by either a 2.0-litre petrol engine or a 3.0-litre diesel engine.

Variant and Trim Updates
The Defender was earlier available with five engine options, including a 2.0-litre petrol, 3.0-litre petrol, 3.0-litre diesel, 5.0-litre V8, and a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid. Now, only the 2.0-litre petrol and 3.0-litre diesel engines remain.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine is limited to the 110 body style in the X-Dynamic HSE trim, making it the only petrol variant. The 3.0-litre diesel engine is available across all three body styles (90, 110, and 130) and can be selected in the X-Dynamic HSE, X, and Sedona Edition trims.

Impact on Pricing Structure
This restructuring has led to an increase in the base price of the Defender, as the 2.0-litre petrol is no longer offered in the more affordable 90 body style. Conversely, the discontinuation of the V8 option has significantly reduced the top-end price. It’s worth noting that the recently introduced Defender Octa V8 is still available, but only in limited numbers for India.

Market Strategy
According to dealer sources, Land Rover has retained only the most popular engine options to streamline the lineup. The Defender continues to be a fully imported model, unlike the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which have recently started local assembly. Additionally, Land Rover has begun delivering the locally assembled Range Rover Sport.
