Audi A8 Expert Review

The Audi A8 is the company’s largest sedan. It is the top-of-the-line for the A3, A4, and A6. The A8 will be redesigned in 2022, so there aren’t many changes this year. Even though this type of car isn’t as popular as it used to be due to the rise of luxury SUVs, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Genesis G90, and Lexus LS are still some of the A8’s competitors.

What We Believe

We haven’t had a chance to drive the standard A8, but we have driven its sportier sibling, the S8. We like the redesigned model’s bold new look, which stays true to Audi’s design style without being as boring as some of the company’s other cars. Even in person, the OLED taillights are very cool.

The new S8’s trick predictive adaptive suspension and rear-wheel steering stood out the most. The available suspension system uses a camera to read the road ahead and can adjust the load on each control arm separately. This makes the big-body sedan seem to float over bumps. With rear steering, the huge four-door car is not only easier to park, but it also shrinks around the driver when going fast down a two-lane road with lots of turns.

How things go and how well they go

If you don’t want the 563-hp Audi S8 performance model, there’s only one engine choice for the A8. The standard car only comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and Audi says that the two together can go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. In 2022, the fuel economy was a respectable 19/28 mpg in the city and on the highway.

Is there an electric Audi A8?

Audi doesn’t make an electric version of its top-of-the-line A8 sedan, which is a big loss for the German company. The Mercedes-Benz EQS is a battery-powered version of the S-Class, and BMW just showed off the all-electric i7, which is the same as the 7 Series except for its engine. Audi does make the E-Tron GT, but it is a smaller and less luxurious car. In the future, will Audi sell an electric A8? Only time will tell.

Rates of safety and features

The Audi A7 has a full set of features to help the driver. As part of the Executive package, you can get adaptive cruise control, lane centering, recognition of traffic signs, and help at an intersection. Automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams come standard, as does a camera system that lets you see everything around you.

The NHTSA and the IIHS have not tested the A8, which is like a lot of full-size luxury sedans.

Technology

Audi is known for its high-tech, high-end interiors. The A8’s cabin is nice, but we wish it had more to offer. The Audi flagship has the same 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display as the A3, which costs less than $40,000. It also has the same 8.6-inch touchscreen that is used to control the climate as the A6 and A7. Also, as much as we love the Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, you can get the same display in almost every Audi product. We like the Bang & Olufsen sound system that comes standard, but we think Audi could have done more, especially when we look at what BMW has done with the new 7 Series.

The Audi A8 is an expensive deal

The Audi A8, which starts at a price of $87.595, is not cheap. But look at what else is out there. A base 2023 BMW 7 Series will cost you at least $94,295, while a fully loaded Audi A8 will still cost less than a base Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which starts at $112,150. The Genesis G90 AWD costs $78,545, which is a lot of features for the money, but some people only want to buy German cars.
