Maruti Suzuki to Launch Premium MPV Based on Toyota Innova Hycross by July 2023

Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that it will launch an all-new premium MPV based on the Toyota Innova Hycross by July 2023. This will be the first Toyota product rebadged for Maruti Suzuki in India and sold through the Nexa dealership chain as its flagship model.

Distinct Styling Elements Expected

The Maruti version of the Innova Hycross is expected to have some unique styling elements, mainly on the front with a different grille, bumper, and headlamp design. The back of the MPV could feature a unique tail-lamp design with the Nexa theme seen on other Maruti models. The interior may also have some trim differences.

Limited Supply, Not a Volume Product

Toyota recently paused bookings for the top trims of the Innova Hycross due to high demand, and it remains to be seen how many vehicles can be supplied to Maruti. The new MPV may not be a volume product, and supply will depend on Toyota’s capacity and needs.

Launch Date and Sales Strategy

The premium MPV will go on sale by July 2023, with deliveries beginning thereafter. All three models, including the recently launched Fronx and the upcoming Jimny, will be sold through Nexa outlets.

Carbon-Friendly Hybrid Technology

The new MPV will sit on the Toyota TNGA-C architecture, and the naturally aspirated petrol and strong hybrid petrol engines that power the Innova Hycross will also power the Maruti MPV. Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Bhargava stated that the new vehicle would be a strong hybrid, three-row, top-of-the-line kind of vehicle in terms of price, and it is a path-breaking vehicle because of its carbon-friendly hybrid technology.

Cross-Badging History

Suzuki-built vehicles like the Vitara Brezza and the Baleno were cross-badged and sold as the Toyota Urban Cruiser and the Glanza in India, respectively, since the inception of the Toyota-Suzuki alliance in 2017. The new MPV will be the first Toyota product rebadged for Maruti Suzuki in India and sold through the Nexa dealership chain as its flagship model.

Europe’s Cross-Badged Models

In Europe, two Toyota models, the RAV-4 and the Corolla Wagon, are sold as Suzuki offerings – the A-Cross and the Swace, respectively.

Final Thoughts

Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming premium MPV based on the Toyota Innova Hycross is expected to have unique styling elements and trim differences from the Toyota model. While the new MPV may not be a volume product, it represents a path-breaking vehicle with carbon-friendly hybrid technology. The MPV will go on sale by July 2023, and all three models will be sold through Nexa outlets.
