Citroen Basalt Begins Production in India Ahead of Imminent Launch

Citroen India has confirmed that series production of its upcoming SUV, the Citroen Basalt, is now underway. This new model is being manufactured at the Thiruvallur plant in Tamil Nadu, where Citroen also produces the C3 Aircross SUV, the C3 high-riding hatchback, and the electric eC3.

Key Highlights of the Citroen Basalt:

  • Launch Timeline: Expected to debut in the market in the coming months.
  • Engine: Equipped with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine.
  • Features: Anticipated to offer more features than the C3 Aircross.
  • Competitors: Set to rival the Tata Curvv.

The Citroen Basalt, showcased in a near-production-ready form a few months ago, is designed as an SUV-coupe and measures approximately 4.3 meters in length. It will compete directly with the upcoming Tata Curvv and other popular midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq. It will also serve as an alternative to Citroen’s own C3 Aircross.

Citroen Basalt: Powertrain and Features

The Basalt will share its 110hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with the C3 Aircross, offering both manual and automatic transmission options. Beyond its distinctive sloping roofline, the Basalt is expected to come with enhanced features compared to the C3 hatch and C3 Aircross, which have faced criticism for their relatively sparse equipment levels.

With these upgrades, Citroen aims to position the Basalt as a well-equipped and stylish option in the competitive midsize SUV segment.
