Tesla to Open First India Showroom in Mumbai, Delhi Location Also in the Works

Tesla is set to make its long-awaited entry into India, with its first showroom confirmed for Mumbai. According to a report by Reuters, the electric vehicle giant has signed a five-year lease for a retail space in the Maker Maxity complex at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The showroom, spanning over 4,000 square feet, was officially registered on February 16, 2025.

Delhi Showroom Likely to Follow

In addition to Mumbai, Tesla is reportedly finalizing a showroom in Delhi, specifically in the Aerocity business district. While details about the Delhi location remain scarce, the move signals Tesla’s broader plans to establish a strong presence in key metropolitan hubs.

Which Tesla Models Will Be Available in India?

Tesla is expected to launch its Indian operations in the coming months, but the specific models that will be available remain unclear. Initially, the company will import fully assembled electric vehicles (EVs) through the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route.

Government Support Through Lower Import Duties

Currently, imported EVs attract a steep 110% tariff in India, but the government is working on a new EV policy to incentivize Tesla’s entry. Under the proposed policy, the import duty could be slashed to 15% for automakers that commit to setting up local manufacturing within a few years. Maharashtra’s Chakan industrial region is rumored to be under consideration for Tesla’s future production facility.

With these developments, Tesla is poised to make a significant impact on India’s EV market, bringing its globally renowned electric cars to one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
