Mercedes-Benz G 580 Electric Launched in India at Rs 3 Crore

After teasing the electric G-Class for over a week, Mercedes-Benz has officially launched the G 580 Edition One in India at a price of Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom). This model, also known as the Mercedes G 580 with EQ Technology, is part of the brand’s electrification efforts and will be available alongside the AMG G 63 facelift, which is priced at Rs 3.64 crore. Bookings for the G 580 opened in July 2024 and have already sold out until Q3 2025. Mercedes will showcase the G 580 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in Delhi next week.

Mercedes G 580 Exterior Design

True to its heritage, the G 580 retains the iconic boxy silhouette of the G-Class, with a design reminiscent of the G 450d. To enhance its aerodynamics, the electric G-Class features a raised hood with air curtains, redesigned A-pillars, a roof-mounted spoiler, and modified rear wheel-arch flares. LED light signatures on the front further distinguish the EQG from its gas-powered counterparts.

The electric model benefits from a reduced drag coefficient of 0.44, an improvement over the G 450d’s 0.48. In line with its EV nature, the G 580 offers the option of a charging cable holder in place of the traditional spare wheel mounted on the boot.

Mercedes G 580 Interior Features

The G 580’s interior stays true to the G-Class tradition, with minor adaptations to accommodate the electric powertrain. It continues to feature the renowned Mercedes MBUX multimedia system, with dual 12.3-inch displays for the driver’s information and the infotainment system. Below the touchscreen, there are physical controls for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, as well as adaptive cruise control.

The G 580 also boasts the Offroad Cockpit, which houses controls for off-roading between the air vents. The boot offers 555 liters of space, which is slightly less than the internal combustion G-Class models, and the electric version does not have a “frunk.”

Mercedes G 580 Battery, Range, and Performance

Powering the G 580 is a 116kWh battery, the same size used in the EQS SUV, though it’s mounted differently within the G-Class’ ladder frame chassis. This battery offers a claimed WLTP range of 473 km, and it can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 32 minutes using a fast charger at up to 200 kW.

With four electric motors and a two-speed gearbox, the G 580 delivers a combined output of 587 hp and 1,164 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, with a top speed of 180 km/h.

Off-Road Capabilities of the Mercedes G 580

The G 580 maintains the independent front suspension of its predecessor but introduces a rear rigid axle and virtual mechanical differential locks for enhanced torque vectoring. The off-road system also includes a low-range transmission and a crawl function, which enables the vehicle to travel as slowly as 2 km/h in off-road conditions. The G 580’s water wading capacity has also been improved to 850mm, 100mm more than the standard G-Class.

One of the most notable features of the G 580 is the G-Turn, which allows it to rotate 360 degrees on the spot. Additionally, the G-Steering system reduces the turning circle by allowing the vehicle to pivot around individual wheels, making it an even more capable off-road machine.
