India’s passenger vehicle market kicked off FY2027 with impressive momentum as carmakers recorded their highest-ever April sales. According to FADA retail data, total passenger vehicle sales reached 4,07,335 units in April 2026, marking a healthy 12.21 percent year-on-year growth.
The list of India’s top 10 bestselling cars in April 2026 highlights the growing dominance of SUVs and practical family cars. While Maruti Suzuki continued its stronghold with six models in the top 10, Tata Motors secured two positions. Hyundai and Mahindra also featured among the country’s most popular vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Becomes India’s Bestselling Car
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire emerged as the highest-selling passenger vehicle in India during April 2026 with 23,580 units sold. The compact sedan registered nearly 39 percent YoY growth, thanks to its excellent fuel efficiency, comfortable ride quality and strong demand from both private buyers and fleet operators.
Its balanced pricing and low maintenance costs continue to make the Dzire one of the most value-packed sedans in the market.
Tata Punch Continues Strong SUV Momentum
The Tata Punch and Punch EV together secured the second position with 19,107 units sold. Tata’s compact SUV recorded one of the highest growth rates in the top 10 list at nearly 53 percent YoY.
Compact dimensions, SUV-like styling and multiple powertrain options continue to attract urban buyers looking for a practical yet rugged vehicle.
Maruti Ertiga Remains India’s Favourite MPV
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga retained its crown as India’s bestselling MPV with sales of 19,063 units. The Ertiga remains a preferred choice among large families and commercial users due to its spacious cabin, impressive mileage and affordable running costs.
Its strong reputation for reliability continues to support steady sales month after month.
Maruti Fronx Sees Rising Demand
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx posted strong sales of 18,829 units in April 2026. Its sporty crossover styling, refined petrol engines and premium cabin experience have helped it gain popularity among younger buyers.
The Fronx has quickly become one of Maruti Suzuki’s fastest-growing models in the compact SUV segment.
Wagon R and Baleno Continue Maruti’s Dominance

The Tata Nexon and Nexon EV together recorded 18,126 unit sales in April 2026. Tata’s popular SUV continues to benefit from its wide range of petrol, diesel, CNG and electric variants.
Its strong safety credentials and modern feature list have helped it remain one of India’s top-selling SUVs.
Swift Remains a Popular Hatchback Choice
The Maruti Suzuki Swift sold 17,829 units last month, registering over 22 percent growth. The hatchback continues to appeal to buyers with its sporty character, fuel-efficient engine and easy drivability.
Despite rising competition, the Swift remains one of India’s most trusted premium hatchbacks.
Hyundai Creta Faces Slight Decline
The Hyundai Creta, including the Creta EV, registered 15,291 unit sales in April 2026. Although sales declined by around 10 percent YoY, the Creta continued to dominate the midsize SUV segment.
Its premium features, spacious interior and multiple engine options remain key strengths.
Mahindra Scorpio Continues Strong SUV Legacy
The Mahindra Scorpio lineup, including the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N, rounded off the top 10 list with 14,719 units sold.
