Stellantis Confirms Leapmotor’s Entry into Indian EV Market

Stellantis has officially confirmed that Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand Leapmotor will soon make its debut in India. This marks Stellantis’ fourth brand in the country, joining Citroen, Jeep, and Maserati. The move also validates earlier reports from February 2024, which hinted at Leapmotor’s India plans.

Initial Strategy: CKD Assembly Followed by Localisation

Although Stellantis hasn’t revealed a definitive launch date, initial operations are expected to begin with CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly, paving the way for increased localisation depending on market response. The company’s Ranjangaon facility is likely to serve as the assembly hub, though detailed plans are yet to be finalized.

Leapmotor’s global expansion is being handled through Leapmotor International, a joint venture in which Stellantis holds a 51% stake. This venture has exclusive rights to manufacture, sell, and export Leapmotor vehicles outside of China.

First Products: Compact Hatchback and Midsize SUV

While an official product line-up hasn’t been announced, sources suggest Leapmotor will enter the Indian market with two models:

  • T03 Hatchback: Positioned as a rival to the Tata Tiago EV, the T03 is expected to offer a compact, affordable electric solution for city driving.

  • C10 SUV: A five-seater midsize electric SUV designed to compete with upcoming models like the Hyundai Creta EV, MG’s electric SUV (Windsor), and Maruti’s e-Vitara.

Looking ahead, Stellantis plans to introduce six Leapmotor EVs in India by 2027, reflecting the group’s long-term commitment to the Indian EV ecosystem.

Dealership Strategy: Leveraging Existing Network

Leapmotor is expected to utilize Stellantis India’s existing dealership network. While these outlets have seen limited footfall so far, the introduction of a new EV brand could boost activity and provide much-needed momentum for the dealerships.

Statement from Stellantis India Leadership

“We’re excited to bring Leapmotor to Indian roads,” said Shailesh Hazela, CEO and MD of Stellantis India. “Our aim is to offer premium EV options that resonate with India’s aspirational and environmentally conscious consumers.”

Growing EV Competition in India

Leapmotor’s entry comes at a time when the Indian EV market is heating up. VinFast, the Vietnamese EV player, is set to start operations in the second half of 2025 with two locally assembled SUVs. Meanwhile, Tesla continues to negotiate with the Indian government regarding import duties as it explores potential entry.
