Mercedes-Benz India has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated electric G-Class, dubbed the G 580 with EQ Technology, will debut in India on January 9, 2025. The event may also witness the announcement of its pricing. Previously showcased in concept form at the Bharat Mobility Show in early 2024, the G 580 has been making waves globally since its mid-2024 international launch.
A Trailblazing Off-Road EV
Mercedes-Benz describes the G 580 as a no-compromise electric SUV designed to surpass its combustion-engine predecessor in off-road capabilities. This model also marks a significant evolution in the brand’s naming convention for electric vehicles, with the “EQ Technology” suffix signaling its position as a fully electric variant of the iconic G-Class.
Design Evolution with a Nod to Tradition
While maintaining its iconic boxy silhouette, the G 580 integrates subtle updates to differentiate it as an electric model. These include an EQ-specific grille design, discreet badging, and aerodynamic enhancements such as a redesigned A-pillar and a roof-mounted spoiler lip. The vehicle’s drag coefficient has been improved to 0.44Cd, a noticeable reduction from the 0.48Cd of the G 450d.
An innovative touch comes in the form of an optional rear-mounted charging cable holder, designed to resemble the traditional spare wheel cover. Inside, the cabin retains its luxurious and rugged design ethos, with minimal changes beyond EV-specific controls and switchgear.
Performance and Technology
The G 580 boasts a cutting-edge powertrain, featuring four electric motors—one per wheel—each delivering 147hp. This setup results in a combined output of 587hp and a staggering 1,165Nm of torque. Each motor is paired with a two-speed gearbox, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under 5 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 km/h.
The vehicle is equipped with a 116kWh battery, borrowed from the EQS, which supports fast charging at up to 200kW and offers an impressive claimed range of 470km.
Unmatched Off-Road Capabilities
The G 580 stays true to its off-road lineage with features like independent front suspension and a new rigid rear axle integrated with electric drive units. It also includes advanced virtual differential locks for optimized torque vectoring and a shiftable low-range transmission. Water wading capability has been increased to 850mm, 100mm more than its combustion counterpart.
For hardcore off-road enthusiasts, the G 580 introduces three bespoke driving functions:
- G-Turn: Enables a 720-degree on-the-spot rotation.
- G-Steering: Reduces the turning circle by pivoting around an individual wheel.
- Off-Road Crawler: Allows precise crawling at speeds as low as 2 km/h.
What to Expect
The G 580 promises to redefine luxury off-road EVs in the Indian market, combining the ruggedness of the G-Class with cutting-edge electric technology. With its unique blend of performance, sustainability, and iconic design, this electric SUV is set to attract adventurers and luxury connoisseurs alike.
