Maruti’s Premium MPV Engage Unveil on July 5

Maruti Suzuki is set to launch an exciting new MPV, possibly named the Engage, on July 5, 2023. Developed jointly with Toyota, this MPV will be a sister product to the highly popular Innova Hycross, but with distinct styling elements to set it apart. The vehicle is expected to be available for sale by late July through Maruti’s Nexa dealerships.

Differentiated Design

Like previous shared models between Maruti and Toyota, the Maruti version of the Innova Hycross will feature unique design cues specific to the brand. Leaked design patents suggest a fresh front grille design with a honeycomb mesh pattern, accented by chrome trims and two horizontal chrome bars connecting the headlamps.

The front bumper will be tweaked, incorporating a prominent lip with a faux brushed aluminium finish, reminiscent of the Grand Vitara. Minor modifications are also expected for the rear bumper. The headlamps and tail lamps will retain their overall shape but showcase different internals and graphics.

Notably, the Maruti MPV is anticipated to adopt the brand’s signature ‘three dots’ LED DRL treatment seen on the Grand Vitara and Baleno, aligning it with other Nexa products.

Platform and Powertrain

The new Maruti MPV will be built on the Toyota TNGA-C architecture and will offer the same naturally aspirated petrol and strong-hybrid petrol engines found in the Innova Hycross.

First Rebadged Toyota for Maruti

This premium MPV marks a significant milestone as the first Toyota product to be rebadged for Maruti Suzuki. While Suzuki has previously cross-badged vehicles like the Vitara Brezza and Baleno for Toyota, this MPV will be manufactured by Toyota at its Bidadi plant and supplied to Maruti.

Implications and Challenges

The Innova Hycross enjoys immense popularity and has a long waiting period. Toyota recently halted bookings for its top trims due to high demand. Therefore, it remains to be seen how many of these vehicles Toyota can supply to Maruti. However, with its unique design cues, strong hybrid powertrain, and positioning as Maruti’s most expensive model, the new MPV is poised to make a significant impact in the market.
