Mahindra Unveils Scorpio N Based Pick Up Concept

Mahindra recently showcased its latest creation, the Global Pik Up, at its annual Independence Day event held in South Africa. This exciting concept, derived from the Scorpio N, hints at an upcoming production pickup truck with the codename Z121. The standout feature of this new pickup is its robust ‘next-generation ladder-frame’ chassis, designed to excel in safety tests such as Global NCAP and Euro NCAP.

The design of the Global Pik Up is a blend of innovation and familiarity. The front end resembles the Scorpio N, featuring similar headlights, bonnet, fenders, and doors. The bumper stands out with a rugged bash-plate and tow hooks, topped by a striking, protruding grille. Notably, the concept is equipped with a snorkel for enhanced water-wading capabilities, while a roof rack at the front holds a wide LED light bar.

From the side, you can spot design cues from the Scorpio N, especially in the door cladding. The double-cab configuration incorporates a unique flying buttress design for the load bed, and the show vehicle showcases two spare tires in the cargo area. While specific dimensions haven’t been released, it seems the wheelbase has been elongated to accommodate a sizable load area, likely around 2850mm – equivalent to the four-door Thar’s wheelbase.

At the rear, the tailgate proudly bears the ‘Mahindra’ emblem, and the bumper includes practical tow hooks along with a built-in step for easier access to the load bed. The distinctive pixel-like design of the tail-lights, previewed in teasers, adds a modern touch.

A sunroof is also part of the package, catering to the preferences of the Indian market. Additionally, the pickup will offer Trailer Sway Mitigation, an advanced Electronic Stability Program (ESP) feature that detects and counteracts trailer sway through brake and throttle interventions.

Under the hood, the Global Pik Up will be propelled by Mahindra’s advanced Gen-II all-aluminium mHawk diesel engine, available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic sourced from Aisin. Four-wheel drive (4WD) and shift-on-the-fly capability ensure versatile off-road performance. The vehicle will feature four distinct drive modes: Normal, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud-Rut, and Sand.

Mahindra’s Global Ambition

This pickup truck is strategically targeted at key markets like South Africa, Australia, and India, where pickups are highly sought after. While the diesel engine will be prominent in major markets, the Global Pik Up will also offer a petrol engine option for regions like certain ASEAN countries. Mahindra’s unveiling of the Global Pik Up in South Africa underscores the company’s expanding global footprint, signaling its ambition to make a significant impact in markets like Australia where pickups, or utes, are extremely popular.
