Hyundai Reclaims Third Spot in May 2025 Sales, Overtakes Tata

After a three-month stint in fourth place, Hyundai has bounced back to claim the third position in India’s domestic passenger vehicle sales for May 2025. The reshuffle in rankings comes as Mahindra consolidates its second-place position and Tata sees a notable month-on-month decline. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki maintains its lead at the top, though it too reported a dip in wholesales. The overall market remained subdued in May, with several OEMs reporting negative growth year-on-year.

Maruti Suzuki: Still No. 1, But Under Pressure

Maruti retained the top position with 1,35,962 units sold in May 2025, a 5.6% year-on-year drop. Small car sales took the biggest hit, falling by nearly 10,000 units compared to May last year. The brand did see a marginal 1.3% growth in its SUV and MPV segment with 54,899 units. On the export front, Maruti shipped out 31,219 vehicles.

Mahindra: Holding Steady at Second

Mahindra solidified its second-place standing with 52,431 units sold, marking a healthy 21.3% increase YoY. The company’s SUV-centric strategy continues to pay off, as it maintains a wide lead over Hyundai and Tata. Mahindra also exported 2,388 vehicles during the month.

Hyundai: Back in the Top Three

Hyundai reported 43,861 units in May, enough to edge out Tata for the third position. However, this figure is down 10.8% YoY and 1.2% MoM. Exports added another 14,840 units, putting Hyundai ahead of Mahindra in total despatches (domestic + exports).

Tata: Slips to Fourth Despite EV Gains

Tata Motors saw its domestic sales shrink by 11% YoY to 41,557 units. The company also registered an 8.1% drop from April’s numbers. On the upside, Tata’s EV sales grew marginally to 5,685 units – a 2% increase compared to May last year.

Toyota: Momentum Builds

Toyota continues its growth streak, posting a 22.2% YoY increase with 29,280 units sold. This follows April’s 33% surge. Notably, over 10,000 of these units were rebadged Maruti models (Glanza, Rumion, Taisor). The brand also exported 1,584 vehicles.

Kia: Five Months of Consecutive Growth

Kia sold 22,315 units in May, reflecting a 14.4% YoY growth, though slightly lower than April’s 23,623 units. This marks Kia’s fifth month of sustained growth, driven by strong demand for its SUVs.

Skoda: Massive Yearly Spike

Skoda’s despatches surged to 6,740 units, up an impressive 133.7% YoY. The rise is largely credited to the strong performance of the new Kushaq-based Kylag. However, MoM numbers dipped by 7.7%.

MG Motor: Continues on Growth Path

MG posted robust numbers again with 6,304 units sold, up 32.2% YoY. The brand has shown consistent growth, coming off a strong April performance (5,829 units).

Honda: Declining Despatches

Honda sold 3,950 units in May, down 18.1% YoY. Exports also fell sharply from 6,521 units in May 2024 to 2,035 last month, pointing to a broader slowdown.

Volkswagen: Minor Decline

Volkswagen recorded 2,848 units in May 2025 – a 13% drop compared to the same month last year. MoM sales remained nearly flat.

Others: On the Decline

Several brands posted sharp YoY declines:

  • Renault: 2,502 units (-32.5%)

  • Nissan: 1,354 units (-38.8%)

  • Citroen: 333 units (-35.3%)
