Genesis X Gran Coupe and Convertible Concepts Revealed

At the Seoul Mobility Show, Genesis has taken the wraps off two stunning new concept cars—the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible. Derived from the G90, the flagship luxury sedan from Hyundai’s premium arm, these new models serve as bold design statements while previewing potential future additions to the Genesis lineup.

G90-Inspired Concepts with Distinct Identities

While the X Gran Coupe and Convertible are both based on the short-wheelbase version of the G90, they bring their own flair to the table. The two-door layout, frameless doors, and striking proportions distinguish them from their limousine sibling, while still retaining the core DNA that defines Genesis design.

  • Twin lightbar LED elements front and rear

  • Frameless doors with flush handles hint at production viability

  • Built on G90’s short-wheelbase platform (Wheelbase: 3,180mm)

Despite being concept cars, both vehicles exhibit a surprisingly production-ready aesthetic, especially in the detailing and door design.

Fifth Entry in the Genesis X Concept Line

The X Gran twins mark the fifth installment in Genesis’ ongoing X Concept series, which has previously included the New York, GV80, Essentia, and Mint. Originally introduced in 2021, the X lineup represents the brand’s long-term vision for sustainable, design-forward grand tourers.

Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer at Genesis, noted, “The idea is to build off the G90 platform and create unique derivatives that could seamlessly integrate into the Genesis family.”

Interior Design: Where Luxury Meets Innovation

Both concepts take interior refinement up a notch. The cabin is adorned with crystal embellishments on key touchpoints like the steering wheel, air vents, and center console, enhancing their luxury appeal.

Additional standout features include:

  • Aluminium-spoked steering wheel

  • Embedded rear-seat entertainment screens

  • Microperforated olive wood trim

  • Convertible-specific grape-hued fabric roof

Powertrain: Mild-Hybrid V6, Not Electric (Yet)

Contrary to earlier rumors suggesting an all-electric drivetrain, both the X Gran Coupe and Convertible make use of the 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine from the G90. Paired with a mild-hybrid system, the setup delivers 415hp at 5,800rpm. This decision likely reflects a near-future production reality where Genesis balances luxury performance with transitional electrification.

Genesis India Plans: GV80 Likely First Entry

Genesis has long been evaluating its India entry, and the GV80 luxury SUV is reportedly the front-runner. With design patents already filed in India, the GV80 could arrive as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) to rival the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q7.

Though the X Gran Coupe and Convertible remain concepts for now, their unveiling points to an exciting new direction for Genesis—one where performance, design, and luxury intersect more boldly than ever before.
