BMW has secured design patents in India for two of its upcoming models: the new-generation 1 Series hatchback and the exclusive Skytop roadster. While the refreshed 2 Series Gran Coupe is expected to debut in the Indian market soon, this marks the first indication of BMW’s intent to reintroduce the 1 Series and launch the Skytop roadster locally.
2025 BMW 1 Series: A Closer Look
The fourth-generation BMW 1 Series, unveiled globally in mid-2024, builds on the platform of its predecessor introduced in 2019. Despite retaining its core structure, the updated model receives significant design enhancements, most notably a reimagined front fascia. The tooth-like kidney grille of the outgoing model has been replaced by a sleeker grille design, inspired by the latest 3 Series. Paired with sharper, slimmer headlights, the hatchback boasts a modern and angular appearance. Minor updates to the side profile and a revamped rear with new tail-lights and bumper designs complete the exterior upgrades.
The sportier M Sport trim continues to stand out with aggressive styling elements compared to the standard version.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the new 1 Series adopts BMW’s advanced 20-inch Curved Display running on the latest OS 9 software. This system combines a 10.7-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment panel. The traditional iDrive rotary controller has been phased out, and physical buttons have been significantly reduced, with features like climate control now integrated into the touchscreen interface.
Engine Options
Internationally, the 1 Series is offered with a range of 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines. The petrol variants include the 170hp 120 and the high-performance 300hp M135 xDrive. Diesel options comprise the 150hp 118d and 163hp 120d.
For India, the reintroduction of the 1 Series would mark its return after an eight-year hiatus, as the second-generation model was discontinued in 2017 due to tepid demand.
BMW Skytop Roadster: A Limited-Run Masterpiece
The BMW Skytop roadster, based on the BMW Concept Skytop unveiled in May 2024, is set to enter production with a highly exclusive run of just 50 units. The roadster draws design inspiration from the iconic Z8 and is built on the 8 Series platform.
Design Highlights
Patent images reveal a sleek, dynamic design featuring ultra-thin LED headlights, large bonnet vents, and BMW’s signature kidney grille with illuminated slats. A distinctive central divider on the bonnet extends to the boot, forming a subtle ducktail spoiler for added aerodynamic flair.
Interior and Performance
The Skytop’s interior exudes luxury with brown leather upholstery, a modern iDrive system, digital driver’s display, and a familiar multifunction steering wheel. Under the hood, it packs a powerful 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, promising an exhilarating driving experience.
The Skytop’s design and exclusivity make it a testament to BMW’s commitment to blending heritage with innovation, and its limited production run adds to its allure.
If BMW follows through with the launch of these models in India, the new 1 Series and Skytop roadster could bring excitement and diversity to its lineup, catering to a wide spectrum of enthusiasts.
