Honda to Invest ₹1500 Crore to Boost Two-Wheeler Production in India; Tapukara Plant Expansion Announced

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is accelerating its growth strategy with a major ₹1,500 crore investment aimed at expanding its manufacturing footprint in the country. The company has confirmed the addition of a third production line at its Tapukara facility in Rajasthan, reinforcing its focus on meeting rising demand in the commuter two-wheeler segment.

Tapukara Plant to Become a Key Production Hub

The Tapukara plant in Alwar district is set to undergo a significant transformation. With the upcoming expansion:

  • A new production line will go live in 2028
  • It will add 6.7 lakh units annually
  • Total plant capacity will rise to 20.1 lakh units per year

This new line will be built with flexible manufacturing capabilities, enabling Honda to produce both commuter motorcycles and scooters on the same assembly line—an approach that enhances efficiency and adaptability to market trends.

Land Acquisition and Job Creation

To support this expansion, Honda is acquiring 73,700 square metres of additional land adjacent to the existing facility. The project is also expected to provide a strong boost to local employment, generating over 2,000 new jobs in the region.

Evolution of the Tapukara Facility

Since its inception in July 2011, the Tapukara plant has steadily scaled up operations:

  • Initial capacity: 6 lakh units/year
  • Expanded to 12 lakh units by 2012
  • Current output: ~13 lakh units annually
  • Expected to reach 13.4 lakh units by FY2026 through efficiency upgrades

In recent years, Honda has introduced advanced automation and improved machining processes, helping the plant enhance productivity and maintain quality standards.

Nationwide Expansion Plans

Honda’s investment isn’t limited to Rajasthan. The company is also working on:

  • A fourth production line at its Vithalapur plant in Gujarat, expected by 2027
  • Overall capacity increase from 62.5 lakh units to 80 lakh units annually by FY2028

This expansion aligns with Honda’s long-term strategy to strengthen its supply chain, improve production flexibility, and cater to India’s growing demand for affordable mobility.

Honda’s Manufacturing Footprint in India

Honda currently operates four major manufacturing facilities across the country:

  • Manesar (Haryana)
  • Tapukara (Rajasthan)
  • Narsapura (Karnataka)
  • Vithalapur (Gujarat)

Together, these plants contribute to a combined production capacity of 62.5 lakh units per year.

Since entering the Indian market in 2001, Honda has produced over 7 crore two-wheelers, making India one of its most critical global markets.

What This Means for Buyers

With increased capacity and flexible production lines, Honda is likely to:

  • Reduce waiting periods on popular models
  • Respond faster to demand shifts
  • Introduce more competitive commuter motorcycles and scooters

This move further strengthens Honda’s position in India’s highly competitive two-wheeler market, especially in the high-volume commuter segment.
