Toyota has officially unveiled the new-generation Land Cruiser FJ, a rugged, retro-inspired SUV that marks the brand’s latest entry point into the legendary Land Cruiser lineup. Set to make its global debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 on October 30, the new FJ — short for Freedom & Joy — is poised to reach Japanese showrooms by mid-2026.
A Compact Yet Capable Off-Roader
The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is built to embody Toyota’s classic off-road DNA in a more compact form. Measuring 4,575mm in length, 1,855mm in width, and 1,960mm in height, the SUV has a 2,580mm wheelbase — around 270mm shorter than the Prado, making it more maneuverable without compromising capability.
Underneath, the new FJ sits on the IMV platform, the same architecture that underpins the Toyota Fortuner and Hilux, ensuring proven strength and durability. Toyota claims the SUV’s 215mm ground clearance, 31-degree approach angle, and 5.5m turning radius make it a serious off-roader despite its smaller footprint.
The chassis has been reinforced with underbody bracing and higher body rigidity, improving both stability and wheel articulation — traits that bring it closer to the hardcore Land Cruiser 70 Series in capability.
Design: Classic DNA Meets Modern Touches
Visually, the Land Cruiser FJ carries a boxy, upright stance that’s instantly reminiscent of its heritage. The chunky bumpers, which can be removed or customized, along with rugged side cladding, emphasize its tough character.
The FJ will also be offered with two headlight options — a modern C-shaped LED setup or retro-styled round headlights inspired by earlier Land Cruisers. At the rear, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel completes the authentic off-road look.
Interior: Practical, Durable, and Familiar
Inside, the new Land Cruiser FJ takes cues from the larger Prado, sharing design elements such as circular air vents, sturdy grab handles, and a chunky gear lever. However, Toyota has opted for a more utilitarian layout with durable materials designed for real-world adventure.
Key interior highlights include a 12.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, digital driver display, and physical controls for core functions — ensuring usability even with gloves on. Safety tech hasn’t been compromised either; the SUV features the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite, offering advanced driver-assistance features for added peace of mind.
Engine and Drivetrain
Powering the 2025 Land Cruiser FJ is a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 163hp and 246Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system, ensuring balanced performance on both tarmac and trails.
While Toyota has yet to confirm diesel or hybrid options, the FJ’s setup is clearly aimed at reliability and global accessibility.
India Launch Possibility
As of now, Toyota hasn’t confirmed plans to introduce the Land Cruiser FJ in India. However, with growing enthusiasm for lifestyle SUVs and the upcoming Land Cruiser Prado expected to make a comeback, the FJ could be a strong candidate for the Indian market in the future.
