Land Rover is gearing up to expand the Defender family with the introduction of a smaller, all-electric version set to debut in 2027. Long rumored and recently spotted in camouflaged form by Autocar UK, this compact 4×4 marks the next phase in the Defender’s evolution.
Electric 4×4 to Ride on JLR’s Advanced EMA Platform
This new model will be built on Jaguar Land Rover’s Electric Modular Architecture (EMA), which is designed specifically for electrified powertrains and features cutting-edge 800V electrical systems. The platform will also underpin future electric models like the next-generation Range Rover Evoque and Velar.
Rugged Yet Refined: A Smaller Defender with Familiar Styling
While scaled down in size, the SUV maintains the Defender’s signature design cues—upright stance, boxy shape, and bold proportions. Early sightings suggest a vehicle around 4.6 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and under 1.8 meters tall. Though slightly more road-oriented than its larger sibling, it’s still expected to uphold the Defender’s legendary off-road DNA.
Potential Name: Defender Sport
Though not yet confirmed, the new model might carry the name “Defender Sport,” aligning with Land Rover’s naming convention for more urban-focused variants—similar to how the Discovery Sport sits below the full-size Discovery.
Could Replace the Ageing Discovery Sport
The current Discovery Sport has seen a decline in sales and hasn’t received a major update in years. With the larger Discovery shifting toward a more luxurious space, this new compact Defender EV could step in as its spiritual and strategic successor in the line-up.
Set to Compete with the Electric ‘Little G’ from Mercedes
When it arrives in 2027, the smaller Defender EV won’t be alone in the electric 4×4 market. Mercedes-Benz is also preparing a downsized version of its iconic G-Class, internally referred to as the “Little G.” The two are expected to compete directly in the emerging premium compact electric SUV segment.
