Mahindra has announced a temporary rebranding of its recently unveiled BE 6e electric SUV to BE 6, following a legal dispute over the use of the “6e” name. Priced from ₹18.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the BE 6e is set to compete with rivals such as the Tata Curvv EV and the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV.
Despite the name change, Mahindra intends to contest the rights to the BE 6e trademark in court. The company asserts that it holds a registered trademark for “BE 6e” under Class 12, which pertains to vehicles, distinguishing it from InterGlobe Aviation Limited’s trademark for “6E” used in the airline sector. Mahindra emphasizes that its claim pertains specifically to the “BE 6e” nameplate, not the standalone “6E.”
Furthermore, Mahindra has called InterGlobe’s objection inconsistent, referencing a 2005 incident when Tata Motors opposed the airline’s use of “IndiGo,” citing its Indigo sedan. Mahindra believes this precedent supports its case to retain the BE 6e name.
For now, the electric SUV will be marketed under the BE 6 badge until the legal dispute is resolved. The SUV, Mahindra’s first from its born-electric platform, offers two battery options: a 59kWh pack with a range of 556 km and a 79kWh pack capable of 682 km (MIDC). Deliveries are slated to begin between late February and early March 2025, with the complete pricing details expected in January.
