Hero MotoCorp’s Surge S32 to Enter Production Within a Year

Hero MotoCorp’s innovative Surge S32 is set to begin series production within the next 12 months, with a market launch expected by mid-2025. This groundbreaking vehicle, a hybrid design combining the features of a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler, can now be legally registered under the newly introduced L2/L5 category, paving the way for its commercial rollout. The company estimates an annual production capacity of around 10,000 units for the Surge S32.

Speaking at EICMA 2024, Dr. Pawan Munjal, Executive Chairman and Whole-Time Director of Hero MotoCorp, shared insights into the development: “For the first time in India and globally, we have obtained government approval to register such vehicles for road use. While the two-wheeler and three-wheeler components have distinct registrations, they integrate seamlessly. You can use the three-wheeler setup for family outings and switch to the two-wheeler for deliveries. It’s a versatile, united solution for diverse needs.”

To enable its legal certification, Hero MotoCorp collaborated with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to create the L2/L5 registration category. This category specifically defines a “2-Wheeler-3-Wheeler Combi Module,” where a two-wheeled electric vehicle (L2) can be combined with a non-motorized rear module. The system allows users to switch between configurations as required.

Built on the modular S32 electric platform, the Surge S32 supports various body styles for different applications. Its standout feature is the ability to transform between a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler with ease. The design integrates an e-scooter as the front wheel of the three-wheeler configuration. When docked into the rear module, the scooter’s rear wheel is lifted off the ground, enabling a smooth transition between modes.

This unique design positions the Surge S32 as a versatile, practical solution for both personal and commercial use, reflecting Hero MotoCorp’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
