Volkswagen has officially teased its upcoming entry-level electric vehicle (EV), which will serve as the spiritual successor to the now-discontinued Up hatchback. Expected to be named ID.1 or ID.One, this new model will be positioned below the ID.2all and play a key role in expanding the brand’s all-electric lineup.
Compact Yet Bold Design
The teaser image showcases rectangular headlamps with striking 3D LED graphics, seamlessly integrated into a black grille featuring an illuminated VW logo. Additional design elements include slim vertical DRLs on the front bumper and subtly sculpted fenders, hinting at a modern yet robust stance.
Built on a Shortened MEB Platform
This entry-level EV will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s MEB platform, albeit in a more compact form than the ID.2all. To keep costs competitive, it is likely to feature a single-motor setup and a compact battery pack. The same platform will also underpin affordable Skoda and Seat EVs, designed specifically for the European market.
A Strategic Move for Volkswagen
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer emphasized the significance of this new model, calling it “an affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe.” The production location for the entry-level EV has yet to be confirmed, but Volkswagen Group’s Spanish facilities will handle the ID.2all and ID.2X crossover, along with Skoda and Cupra’s upcoming SUVs.
Volkswagen’s EV Plans for India
Although this entry-level EV may not be destined for India, Volkswagen has ambitious plans for the market. The company is developing India-specific EVs based on the localized IMP (India Main Platform)—a derivative of the China Main Platform (CMP). This initiative will see the launch of a compact electric SUV and a midsize SUV, designed specifically for Indian consumers.
