Midsize Sedan Sales Report April2023: Hyundai Verna leads with highest MoM growth

Hyundai Verna takes the lead with high MoM growth

Hyundai Verna has established its supremacy over other sedans in its segment with the launch of its 1.5L turbo petrol motor, which promises a 0-100 sprint in 8.1 seconds. With a manual transmission variant with a high-performance engine, the Verna has outdone the numbers generated by the previous generation model sold in 2022 and March 2023.

In April 2023, Verna sold 4001 units, holding around 40% of the market share. It registered a staggering YoY gain of 412.29% and an MoM gain of 6.55%, with a volume growth of 3,220 units YoY and 246 units MoM.

Honda City takes the second spot, but sales decline

With the discontinuation of the 4th generation City, Honda City sales fell by 16.52% YoY and 28.70% MoM. The City sold 1920 units in April 2023, compared to 2,300 units sold a year ago and 2,693 units sold a month before. The volume loss stood at 380 units YoY and 773 units MoM.

Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus

Skoda Slavia sales declined by almost 35% YoY, selling 1,586 units in April 2023 compared to 2,431 units sold in the same month last year. However, the MoM analysis cuts some slack for Slavia with 0.76% growth. On the other hand, Volkswagen sold 1,481 Virtus in India last month, experiencing a 17.35% drop in numbers compared to the previous month, losing 311 units in volume.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz registers high YoY and MoM growth

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, once a segment leader, has now reduced to the bottom of this segment. However, Ciaz outdid itself YoY by 76%, selling 1,017 units in April 2023 as opposed to 579 units sold in April 2022. Ciaz also registered an astonishing 239% growth MoM, which is the highest MoM growth in this list.

In total, the midsize sedan segment sold 10,005 units in April 2023, with YoY growth standing at 64.26%, gaining 3,914 units in volume. However, the MoM decline was 1.08%, losing 109 units in volume. To compete with the current crop of sedans, Ciaz needs to grow in size, pack a ton of features, and come equipped with better mechanicals like a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
