India’s scooter market has posted its best-ever performance in FY2025, with total wholesales reaching 68.53 lakh units—a strong 17% year-on-year (YoY) growth. This surpasses the previous record of 67.1 lakh units set in FY2018 and reflects an average monthly volume of over 5.71 lakh scooters, or more than 18,500 units sold daily.
Key Growth Drivers
The record performance was fueled by several factors: a wave of refreshed and new model launches, recovering demand from rural and semi-urban markets, and the accelerating shift towards electric scooters. EVs alone contributed over 7.73 lakh units, accounting for 11% of total scooter sales.
Festive Boost and Monthly Trends
The festive season in October 2024 proved to be a major catalyst, with monthly sales peaking at over 7.21 lakh units. August and September also crossed the 6-lakh mark. Notably, sales exceeded 5 lakh units in eight separate months, underlining consistent market momentum. The only dip came in December, with 4.18 lakh units, as buyers typically defer purchases to the new calendar year.
Manufacturer Performance Overview
Honda Two-Wheelers: Still on Top, But Losing Ground
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India retained its market leadership with 28.4 lakh units sold, up 12% YoY. However, its market share dropped to 41.5% from 43.3% the previous year. Its bestsellers include the Activa and Dio models across 110cc and 125cc variants.
TVS Motor: Rapid Growth Across ICE and EV
TVS Motor Co. sold 18.3 lakh scooters, marking a 25% YoY jump. Its ICE models (Jupiter, NTorq, Zest) accounted for over 15.4 lakh units, while its electric iQube scooter recorded a 44% growth with 2.73 lakh units sold. TVS’ overall market share increased to 26%.
Suzuki Motorcycle: Steady Gains
Suzuki clocked a 15% growth with sales crossing 10.24 lakh units, driven by the enduring popularity of the Access scooter.
Hero MotoCorp: Mixed Fortunes
Hero sold 3.91 lakh scooters, a 2% YoY decline. While its ICE portfolio saw a 12% drop to 3.33 lakh units, the electric Vida range delivered impressive growth—up 195% to 58,500 units, albeit from a lower base.
Yamaha grew 13% YoY with nearly 3.10 lakh units sold. However, its market share slipped to 4.51%. The Fascino and Ray ZR remain key contributors, along with the 155cc Aerox, which saw a 24% sales increase.
Bajaj Auto: Biggest Leap
Bajaj Auto posted the most significant growth, selling over 2.77 lakh scooters—a massive 140% YoY surge. This helped it double its market share to 4%. Much of this momentum came from strong electric scooter sales, putting Bajaj ahead of TVS in e-scooter volumes.
Ather Energy: EV-Only Player on the Rise
Ather Energy recorded 1.55 lakh units sold, up 44% YoY. Its market share rose to 2.26%, driven largely by strong uptake of its new Rizta family e-scooter.
EVs Make Strong Inroads
FY2025 has emerged as a breakout year for electric scooters in India. Over 7.73 lakh electric two-wheelers were sold, reflecting both rising consumer confidence and broader OEM participation. Bajaj led EV sales among traditional players, slightly edging out TVS in total e-scooter dispatches.
Conclusion
FY2025 has not only been a record-breaking year for scooter sales in India but also a pivotal one in terms of electrification. As established players ramp up EV offerings and new models continue to attract demand from across the country, the scooter segment is poised for further evolution in FY2026.
