Toyota’s Third Plant in India to Boost SUV Production and Introduce Corolla Cross-based Model

In a strategic move to expand its presence in the Indian market, Toyota is planning to establish a third manufacturing plant in the country. This new facility is set to increase the company’s annual production capacity by around 30%, reaching a remarkable 5 lakh units, up from the current 4 lakh units. Located in Bidadi, Karnataka, this upcoming plant will mirror Toyota’s existing facilities in the same region.

Toyota’s Ambitious Expansion Plans

The new plant is slated to have an initial production capacity ranging from 80,000 to 1,20,000 units, with the potential to scale up to approximately 2 lakh units. This expansion aligns with Toyota’s commitment to meet the growing demand for its vehicles in the Indian market.

The Star of the Show: A Three-Row SUV

One of the key highlights of this expansion is the introduction of an all-new three-row SUV, codenamed the 340D. This SUV is set to become a cornerstone of Toyota’s lineup and is expected to hit the Indian market by 2026.

The 340D SUV draws inspiration from the popular Corolla Cross model, known for its global success. However, the India-specific version will feature a longer wheelbase, extended by approximately 150mm, to accommodate a third row of seats. This thoughtful design addition will provide passengers with ample space and comfort.

Stylish and Distinctive Design

While details on the SUV’s styling remain scarce, Toyota aims to distinguish it from the Corolla Cross with unique design elements. This includes a refreshed front end, featuring a distinct nose, and revamped soft parts such as a redesigned plastic bumper, grille, and headlights.

Powering the Future

Under the hood, the Corolla Cross-based SUV is expected to share its powertrain options with the Innova Hycross. This means potential engine choices could include a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 173hp, as well as a 2.0-liter strong-hybrid powertrain delivering 184hp and a robust 206Nm of torque from the electric motor. The strong hybrid system promises to give the SUV a competitive edge in terms of efficiency, even when compared to diesel-powered rivals.

A Global Endeavor

The 340D SUV, while primarily intended for the Indian market, is not exclusive to India. Toyota has plans to export this model to other markets as well. However, it’s worth noting that there’s no confirmation on whether it will spawn a Maruti derivative.

In conclusion, Toyota’s expansion plans in India are set to bolster its production capacity and bring forth an exciting addition to its lineup. The upcoming Corolla Cross-based SUV promises to deliver both style and performance, further solidifying Toyota’s position in the highly competitive Indian SUV segment.
