Ola Electric has announced that it will begin delivering its Gen 3 platform-based electric scooters in January 2025, moving up from its previously anticipated release window of mid-March to April.
Accelerating the Launch of Gen 3 Scooters
Ola’s decision to accelerate the Gen 3 scooter launch reflects the growing popularity of electric two-wheelers in India. Adoption rates have surged, with market share rising from 16.1% in June to 21.4% in September 2024. The company aims to meet this rising demand, especially in high-growth states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, where affordable scooters priced around Rs 1 lakh are particularly popular.
In a recent regulatory filing following its Q2 FY25 investor call, Ola Electric confirmed the expedited timeline for its Gen 3 S1 scooters, with deliveries now set to begin at the start of 2025.
Expansion of Ola’s Product Line-Up
As part of its Gen 3 architecture, Ola plans to release five new models, expanding its offerings beyond the current S1 series with two new sub-brands, the S2 and S3. The S2 lineup will include three models: the City for urban travel, the Tourer for longer rides, and a performance-focused sports model. Meanwhile, the S3 sub-brand will feature two premium maxi-scooters—the Grand Adventure and Grand Tourer—designed for luxury and performance.
The Gen 3 platform introduces a re-engineered integrated battery, magnetless motor, and embedded electronics within the chassis. This innovative design aims to boost performance by 26% and cut production costs by over 20%. By using magnetised electrical coils rather than permanent magnets, these magnetless motors deliver higher torque. Ola’s vertically integrated Gen 3 platform will rely on 4,860 lithium-ion cells, manufactured at the company’s Tamil Nadu Gigafactory by early FY26.
Market Expansion and Future Product Plans
Currently holding a 30% market share in India’s electric two-wheeler segment, Ola plans to expand its network from 782 stores to 2,000 by March 2025. The company also intends to enter the electric motorcycle segment with the Roadster series, expected for delivery in Q4 FY25. Ola has committed to a roadmap of 20 new products, introducing at least one new offering each quarter.
Ola’s current electric scooter lineup starts at Rs 75,000 (ex-showroom, India).
Addressing Service and Distribution Challenges
Ola Electric acknowledged recent capacity challenges at its service centers but reported that 80% of requests are now resolved within a single day. To enhance service accessibility, Ola launched its ‘Network Partner Programme’ in September 2024, adding over 1,000 partners to date. By the end of 2025, the company aims to have 10,000 sales and service partners nationwide. This low-capital program is designed to strengthen Ola’s direct-to-consumer (D2C) model and promote wider EV adoption across India.
