Maruti Suzuki, a longstanding exporter of India-made Suzuki and Toyota models, has recently started shipping the India-manufactured Fronx to Japan. Unlike the Fronx models available in India, which come with a different engine configuration, the Japan-bound Fronx is equipped with a 1.5-liter petrol engine. This engine is already being used in Fronx models sold in other international markets, but the Japanese variant comes with a significant upgrade: Suzuki’s AllGrip Select All-Wheel Drive (AWD) technology, setting it apart from the front-wheel drive (FWD) versions sold elsewhere.
Key Features of the Fronx for Japan:
- 1.5-Litre Mild Hybrid Petrol Engine: The Japan-spec Fronx is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild hybrid technology, similar to the version sold in South Africa. This engine is coupled with either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox with paddle shifters.
- AllGrip Select AWD Technology: Available exclusively on higher variants, the AllGrip Select AWD system offers enhanced traction and control with four driving modes—Auto, Sport, Snow, and Lock. These modes adjust throttle response and power distribution to the rear wheels according to road conditions and driver input. The AWD system is seamlessly integrated into the car, without any external “AllGrip” badging, and necessitates a unique rear suspension layout to accommodate the technology.
Enhanced Interior and Features:
The Japanese Fronx boasts a more premium interior than its counterparts in other markets. It features a dark brown and plum color scheme, with extensive use of soft-touch materials on the door panels and other key areas. The cabin is further enhanced with piano black accents on the door handles, steering wheel, and center console. The seats are upholstered in a dual-tone combination of faux leather and cloth, in plum and black, giving the interior a refined and upscale feel.
In terms of technology, the Japan-spec Fronx is equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that includes lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, front parking sensors, and automatic cruise control. Other notable features include an electronic parking brake with hill-hold assist, heated seats, and additional unique touches tailored for the Japanese market.
Launch and Delivery Schedule:
The Japan-bound Fronx has already seen strong interest, with over 700 bookings recorded ahead of its official launch on October 16. The initial shipment to Japan included 1,600 units, all produced at the Suzuki Motor Group (SMG) factory in Gujarat. Deliveries are set to commence in the second half of October, following the start of bookings earlier this month.
With its blend of advanced features and premium finishes, the made-in-India Fronx is poised to make a strong impact in the Japanese market.
