Mahindra has launched its cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility, located within its expansive 2.83-square-kilometer Chakan manufacturing hub. As part of its ambitious FY22-FY27 investment plan, Mahindra has allocated ₹4,500 crore of its ₹16,000 crore budget to establish this 88,000-square-meter EV-only plant.
High-Tech Production for Upcoming EVs
The facility is set to manufacture models like the BE.06, XUV.e9, and the forthcoming XUV.e7, as part of Mahindra’s growing portfolio of born-electric SUVs. Designed to operate as a fully integrated and highly automated production hub, the plant features advanced robotics with over 1,000 robots and numerous automated transfer systems, ensuring precision and efficiency in manufacturing processes.
Key sections include an automated press shop, an AI-powered body shop utilizing more than 500 robots, and a robotic paint shop. The facility also incorporates an Internet of Things (IoT)-driven “Nerve Center” for real-time monitoring, data insights, and end-to-end traceability. Additionally, Mahindra aims to enhance diversity, targeting a workforce comprising 25% women.
Advanced Battery Assembly Unit
The plant’s battery assembly line is fully automated and engineered for efficiency. Mahindra highlights its compact and patented manufacturing processes, which streamline production flows while minimizing delays. The unit handles battery production, storage, and transfer while conducting rigorous end-of-line testing that replicates real-world conditions to ensure quality and reliability.
This new facility underscores Mahindra’s commitment to sustainable mobility and innovation, positioning it as a key player in the evolving EV landscape.
