Xiaomi YU7 SUV Unveiled as a Tesla Model Y Competitor

Xiaomi, the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer, has unveiled its second electric vehicle, the YU7 SUV, marking its entry into the competitive SUV market. Built on the SU7 sedan platform, the YU7 is set to debut in China by July 2025. Xiaomi plans to focus on domestic sales for the first few years before exploring international markets, citing strong local demand.

Design and Dimensions

The YU7 SUV shares a 3,000mm wheelbase with the SU7 sedan but boasts a slightly larger overall footprint. At 4,999mm in length, 1,996mm in width, and 1,600mm in height, the YU7 outclasses its rival, the Tesla Model Y, which measures 4,751mm long, 1,920mm wide, and 1,624mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,890mm.

The YU7 incorporates several design elements from the SU7, including a blanked-off grille, teardrop-shaped LED headlights, and flush pop-up door handles. New features include black wheel arches and redesigned alloy wheels, giving the SUV a sportier look. Its sweeping roofline, inspired by models like the Ferrari Purosangue, complements its robust SUV styling with bold haunches and plastic cladding. A roof-mounted LiDAR system also hints at advanced driver assistance features. Interior details remain under wraps for now.

Performance and Battery Specs

Under the hood, the YU7 is powered by a dual-motor setup, delivering 691hp—299hp from the front motor and 392hp from the rear. This makes it even more powerful than the SU7 Max variant, which produces 673hp. Despite its 2,405kg kerb weight, the YU7 achieves a top speed of 253kph, slightly lower than the lighter SU7 Max’s 265kph.

The YU7 is equipped with batteries developed by CATL, a leading supplier also associated with Tesla. Although Xiaomi hasn’t disclosed the battery’s exact capacity, it’s likely to use the same 101kWh NMC unit found in the SU7’s top-tier models. This pack offers up to 830km on the CLTC cycle in the sedan, though the YU7’s heavier build may slightly reduce its range. Additionally, if Xiaomi introduces a rear-wheel-drive version of the YU7, it may feature LFP-chemistry batteries like the entry-level SU7 models.

Market Outlook

While Xiaomi previously showcased the SU7 sedan in India to gauge interest, there is no confirmation of its plans to launch electric vehicles in international markets, including India, anytime soon. For now, the brand appears focused on establishing its presence in China’s growing EV sector with the YU7 SUV.
