Toyota Innova Hycross Achieves Stellar 5-Star Rating in Bharat NCAP Crash Tests

The Toyota Innova Hycross has earned a coveted 5-star rating in the Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) crash safety assessments, marking a significant achievement for the MPV. Not only is it the first Toyota model to undergo BNCAP testing, but it also stands as the first MPV and the first hybrid vehicle evaluated under the new safety regime.

Broad-Based Safety Certification

Bharat NCAP has confirmed that the 5-star safety rating applies across the entire Innova Hycross lineup, covering both petrol-only and petrol-hybrid powertrains. The vehicle demonstrated impressive performance in tests assessing both adult and child occupant safety.

Adult Occupant Protection (AOP): Near-Perfect Scores

The Innova Hycross scored an impressive 30.47 out of 32 points in adult occupant protection. In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, it secured 14.47 out of 16 points, offering solid protection for key body regions of both front occupants. However, chest protection was rated as only ‘adequate’.

In the side impact movable deformable barrier evaluation, the MPV achieved a flawless 16 out of 16. It also managed a satisfactory result in the side pole impact scenario, being rated ‘OK’—a commendable outcome for a vehicle of this size.

Child Occupant Protection (COP): Among the Best Yet

When it comes to safeguarding young passengers, the Innova Hycross delivered one of the highest COP scores in BNCAP history—45 out of a possible 49 points. It scored a full 24/24 in the dynamic crash test, 12/12 in the CRS (Child Restraint System) installation assessment, and 9/13 in the vehicle-based safety evaluation.

During testing, both 18-month-old and 3-year-old dummies were seated in rearward-facing child seats using ISOFIX mountings and a support leg. Although the Hycross features ISOFIX anchors on the outer rear seats, it lacks a built-in child restraint system.

Safety Equipment: Comprehensive as Standard

Safety isn’t reserved for top trims in the Innova Hycross. Across all variants, the MPV is equipped with six airbags, three-point seatbelts and reminders for every occupant, electronic stability control (ESC), ISOFIX child seat mounts for outboard rear seats, and a switchable front passenger airbag. It also adheres to AIS-100 standards for pedestrian protection.

The top-end ZX (O) variant raises the safety bar even further with the inclusion of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), enhancing overall driver awareness and crash prevention capabilities.

The Toyota Innova Hycross sets a strong precedent in India’s evolving safety landscape. With high marks across the board, it’s a reassuring choice for families looking for a hybrid MPV that doesn’t compromise on protection.
