SUVs continue to dominate India’s utility vehicle (UV) market in 2024, with 90% of sales in the January-November period attributed to this popular segment. Among the top 10 UVs, the Tata Punch, Hyundai Creta, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza have emerged as clear frontrunners, with each model surpassing 100,000 units sold. Maruti’s Ertiga MPV, the only non-SUV on the list, secured third place in sales. Here’s a closer look at the key performers:
1. Tata Punch
Leading the UV market, the Tata Punch recorded 1,86,958 units sold in the first 11 months of 2024, marking a significant leap from 1,50,182 units in 2023. With consistent monthly sales averaging 17,000 and a record 19,158 units sold in April, the Punch is set to cross the 200,000-unit milestone by year-end. It also tops the FY2025 April-November sales chart with 1,32,995 units, slightly ahead of the Hyundai Creta.
2. Hyundai Creta
The Hyundai Creta retains its status as India’s best-selling midsize SUV, with 1,74,311 units sold between January and November. October saw its highest monthly sales in 2024, with 17,497 units dispatched. Hyundai introduced a facelift of the Creta earlier this year, and the Creta EV is expected to debut in 2025, competing with upcoming electric SUVs from Mahindra and Tata.
3. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
As the sole MPV in the top 10, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga achieved sales of 1,74,035 units—just 276 units shy of the Creta. This represents a significant growth from 1,29,968 units in 2023. The Ertiga reached its peak sales for 2024 in August, with 18,580 units sold, and surpassed the one-million sales milestone earlier in February.
4. Maruti Suzuki Brezza
In the subcompact SUV segment, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza achieved 1,70,823 units sold, marginally surpassing its 2023 total of 1,70,588 units. The Brezza, which was the top-selling UV in 2023, continues to deliver strong numbers but now trails behind the Punch in overall sales.
5. Mahindra Scorpio
The combined sales of the Mahindra Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic reached 1,54,169 units, a 27% growth over 2023’s 1,21,420 units. This performance propelled the Scorpio to the fifth spot, climbing two places from its previous year’s rank. Mahindra’s SUV lineup expanded this year with launches like the Thar Roxx and BE 6.
6. Tata Nexon
Despite being a consistent top performer in previous years, the Tata Nexon saw a decline, with 1,48,073 units sold—22,239 fewer than in 2023. This dip pushed the Nexon to sixth place, ending its two-year streak as the best-selling UV (2021 and 2022).
7. Maruti Suzuki Fronx
A new entrant in the rankings, the Maruti Fronx, posted impressive sales of 1,45,484 units, reflecting a 54% growth compared to its 2023 total of 94,393 units. In September, the Fronx crossed the 200,000-unit mark since its launch, becoming the second Nexa SUV to achieve this milestone.
8. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara
The Maruti Grand Vitara maintained its eighth position with 1,15,654 units sold, nearly matching its 2023 total of 1,13,387 units. Since its launch in September 2022, the Grand Vitara has achieved cumulative sales of over 250,000 units.
9. Hyundai Venue
The Hyundai Venue slipped three places to ninth, with 1,07,554 units sold, down from 1,29,276 units in 2023. It is one of the two SUVs in the top 10 yet to exceed last year’s performance.
10. Kia Sonet
Another new entrant, the Kia Sonet, registered sales of 1,03,353 units, improving its position from 13th in 2023. The Sonet replaces its sibling, the Kia Seltos, in this year’s rankings.
