With festive season discounts and strong consumer demand, CNG car sales in India surged to a record high in October. According to Vahan data (as of November 3, 2024), retail sales for CNG vehicles reached 99,967 units, a substantial 67% year-over-year increase from October 2023’s 59,909 units. This remarkable October performance set a new monthly record, surpassing the previous high of 67,427 units in January 2024.
From January to October 2024, cumulative retail sales across India’s four largest CNG carmakers hit 607,287 units, a 43% increase from the same period in 2023. This already surpasses the total 590,000 CNG units sold in 2023. Market leaders Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Toyota each posted their best-ever monthly CNG sales in October, cementing a strong upward trend.

Maruti Suzuki: With 13 CNG models available, Maruti dominates the CNG market with a 72% market share. October marked the company’s highest-ever monthly sales at 70,281 units. In the January-October period, CNG cars made up 31% of Maruti’s 1.39 million total passenger vehicle sales. Targeting over 600,000 CNG sales by the end of FY2025, Maruti aims for a 38% annual growth.
Tata Motors: Tata’s CNG lineup includes its twin-cylinder Altroz, Tiago, Punch, and Tigor models, which achieved a record 16,586 units in October. Tata’s total January-October CNG sales stand at 94,374 units, marking a 104% year-over-year increase. CNG now makes up 21% of Tata’s passenger vehicle sales, with demand bolstered by its fuel-efficient models.
Hyundai: Hyundai sold 9,725 CNG units in October, the highest in its history, bringing its total sales for the year to 60,787 units (up 19% YoY). Despite a slight dip in market share due to competitors’ gains, Hyundai aims to drive growth through new models like the dual-cylinder Exter and Grand i10 Nios.
Toyota: Toyota’s CNG sales reached 2,800 units in October, setting a new monthly record. With a lineup that includes the Taisor, Glanza, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Rumion, Toyota’s January-October CNG sales hit 12,355 units, marking an impressive 109% year-over-year growth.
The surge in CNG sales reflects a growing consumer preference for eco-friendly and cost-effective options, fueled by competitive offerings from major carmakers.
