MG Windsor vs Tata Nexon EV Real-World DC Fast Charging Test

In our latest round of charging tests — conducted in partnership with Zeon Charging — we pit the MG Windsor EV against its closest rivals: the Tata Nexon EV MR, the Tata Nexon EV 45, and the Mahindra XUV400. Here’s a detailed look at how quickly each EV charges from 20% to 80% on a DC fast charger, along with the range you can realistically expect from a single session.

Tata Nexon EV MR

Price: ₹12.49 lakh – ₹14.79 lakh

The Nexon EV MR (Medium Range) maintains an average charging speed of around 21kW. However, once it crosses 88% State of Charge (SoC), the charging speed begins to taper significantly until a full charge is achieved.

Key Specifications:

  • Battery Capacity: 30.2kWh

  • Power Output: 129hp / 215Nm

  • ARAI Claimed Range: 275km

  • Claimed Charging Time (10–80%): 56 minutes

  • Tested Charging Time (20–80%): 60 minutes

Tata Nexon EV 45

Price: ₹13.99 lakh – ₹16.99 lakh

The larger-battery Nexon EV 45 — which shares its underpinnings with the upcoming Curvv EV 45 — supports peak DC fast charging speeds of up to 60kW. Despite a stepped decline in speed at higher SoCs, it can still manage a 20–80% top-up in under 30 minutes. Given its tested efficiency of 7.79km/kWh, a 29-minute charge translates to approximately 226km of usable range.

Key Specifications:

  • Battery Capacity: 45kWh

  • Power Output: 144hp / 215Nm

  • ARAI Claimed Range: 489km

  • Tested Range: 350km

  • Claimed Charging Time (10–80%): 40 minutes

  • Tested Charging Time (20–80%): 29 minutes

MG Windsor

Price: ₹14 lakh – ₹16 lakh

The MG Windsor impresses with its consistent charging curve, operating at a peak rate of 1.2C, with a noticeable taper starting around 70% SoC. During our tests, it completed a 20–80% charge cycle in just 35 minutes. With a tested efficiency of 8.1km/kWh, this translates to roughly 232km of real-world range gained from a 35-minute charging session.

Key Specifications:

  • Battery Capacity: 38kWh

  • Power Output: 136hp / 200Nm

  • ARAI Claimed Range: 332km

  • Tested Range: 308km

  • Claimed Charging Time (0–80%): 55 minutes

  • Tested Charging Time (20–80%): 35 minutes

Mahindra XUV400

Price: ₹15.49 lakh – ₹16.74 lakh

The Mahindra XUV400 exhibits more fluctuating charging speeds compared to its rivals, especially up to 78% SoC. After that, the speed drops sharply, often falling below 24kW. Based on our efficiency tests (6.45km/kWh), a 37-minute DC fast charging session added about 211km of range.

Key Specifications:

  • Battery Capacity: 39.4kWh

  • Power Output: 150hp / 310Nm

  • ARAI Claimed Range: 456km*

  • Tested Range: 251km

  • Claimed Charging Time: 50 minutes (percentage not specified)

  • Tested Charging Time (20–80%): 37 minutes

*Note: ARAI range for the XUV400 is not calculated based on Urban and Extra-Urban cycles, unlike the others.
