Mercedes-Benz India has issued a recall for select units of the seventh-generation S-Class Maybach, citing a potential fire risk due to an engine control unit (ECU) software issue. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) recall database, the affected models are from the W223 series, which has been available since 2021.
The recall stems from the ECU software failing to meet current specifications, which could result in elevated exhaust temperatures. This anomaly poses a risk of damage to key components like the engine wiring harness and catalytic converter. In extreme cases, it could lead to unexpected loss of propulsion or even a fire hazard.
The recall impacts 386 Maybach S-Class units produced between April 29, 2021, and January 27, 2024, as well as one additional S-Class vehicle manufactured on April 21, 2021. Mercedes-Benz is expected to contact affected customers to arrange free repairs to resolve the issue.
The S-Class lineup in India ranges from the S350d, priced at ₹1.77 crore, to the flagship S 680 4Matic, which costs ₹3.44 crore (ex-showroom). The top-tier variant has recently received updates, introducing new features to enhance its luxury appeal.
