Hyundai Exter EX CNG Launched with Dual Cylinder Tech at ₹7.50 Lakh

Hyundai has expanded its Exter CNG lineup by introducing a new entry-level EX variant priced at ₹7.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). With this addition, the company aims to make its CNG-powered SUV more accessible, especially for buyers looking for a fuel-efficient and budget-friendly alternative in the compact SUV segment.

More Practical Boot Space with Dual Cylinder CNG Setup

The key highlight of the new Exter EX CNG is Hyundai’s Hy-CNG dual-cylinder technology. Unlike conventional CNG systems that utilize a single large tank, this setup splits the capacity between two smaller cylinders. The result? A noticeably more usable boot space, making it more practical for everyday cargo needs — a crucial improvement in CNG cars, where luggage capacity often takes a hit.

While Hyundai also offers a traditional single-cylinder CNG option in the Exter lineup, that configuration has not yet been rolled out for the EX trim.

Price Comparison: Exter CNG vs Petrol

Here’s a detailed look at how the Exter CNG variants compare to their petrol counterparts in terms of pricing:

Variant CNG Price (₹) Petrol Price (₹) Price Gap (₹)

Performance and Mileage

Under the hood, the Exter EX CNG shares the same 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine as the standard petrol model, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. In petrol mode, the engine delivers 83hp and 113.8Nm of torque. However, when running on CNG, output drops slightly to 69hp and 95.2Nm — a trade-off for better fuel efficiency.

Despite the reduced performance, the Exter EX CNG impresses with an ARAI-claimed mileage of 27.1km/kg, making it one of the most efficient compact SUVs currently available. When running on petrol, the mileage is rated at up to 19.4km/l.

Features and Equipment

Even though it’s the base variant, Hyundai hasn’t compromised on safety and essential features. The Exter EX CNG comes equipped with:

  • Six airbags (driver, passenger, and side)

  • H-shaped LED tail-lamps

  • 4.2-inch digital MID (multi-info display)

  • Driver’s seat height adjustment

  • Keyless entry

  • Front power windows

  • Hill start assist

  • Rear parking sensors

  • ABS with EBD

The design and interior layout remain consistent with the standard Exter EX, ensuring the CNG model doesn’t look or feel stripped down.

Market Positioning and Rivals

With the launch of the EX CNG variant, Hyundai is clearly targeting budget-conscious buyers who are also looking at rivals like the Tata Punch iCNG, which similarly offers a twin-cylinder CNG layout. The Exter holds an advantage in terms of features, safety equipment, and cabin space, making it a compelling choice in its segment.

Conclusion

By introducing the EX CNG at ₹7.50 lakh, Hyundai has further strengthened its presence in the rapidly growing CNG car market. The blend of fuel efficiency, safety features, and practicality makes the Exter EX CNG a smart pick for urban commuters and families alike.
