India’s electric vehicle (EV) market achieved a major milestone in August 2025 with record-breaking sales. According to Vahan portal retail sales data, 17,298 electric cars were delivered to customers last month. This marks a robust 155 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to 6,787 units sold in August 2024.
Even on a month-on-month (MoM) basis, EV sales grew by 7.46 percent, up from 16,097 units sold in July 2025.
India EV Market Performance in 2025
The EV industry has sustained double-digit growth throughout 2025. Between January and August, a total of 1,08,751 EVs were sold, compared to 63,583 units during the same period in 2024 — a 71 percent overall increase.

India currently has 14 carmakers retailing electric passenger vehicles. Of them, 10 manufacturers reported YoY growth, while 4 brands witnessed a sales drop compared to last year.

Luxury EV Market in August 2025
The luxury EV segment grew in tandem with the mass-market industry. A total of 464 luxury EVs were sold, marking a 170% YoY increase over 172 units in August 2024.
