The highly anticipated new BMW 5 Series is set to make its debut in India on July 24. For the first time, the 5 Series will be available in a long-wheelbase (LWB) version in India, directly competing with the E-Class LWB. Following China, India becomes the second market to receive this extended version of the 5 Series.
Design and Dimensions
The latest-generation BMW 5 Series LWB boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 5,175mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,520mm in height. The wheelbase extends to 3,105mm, making it 145mm longer overall than the standard 5 Series sedan, with an additional 110mm dedicated to the wheelbase. While these dimensions reflect the Chinese model, the Indian version is expected to include specific modifications, such as a right-hand drive setup and slightly increased ground clearance.
Visually, the 5 Series LWB mirrors the standard model but with a noticeable extension in length, akin to the 3 Series Grand Limousine available in India. Unlike the E-Class LWB, which features a distinct quarter glass and door design, the 5 Series LWB maintains the same rear door design as the standard model, without a rear quarter glass.
Exterior Features
The 5 Series LWB retains the standard car’s headlamp and tail-lamp designs and features an illuminated grille. Some variants also receive subtle modifications to the front and rear bumpers. In China, the 5 Series LWB includes an illuminated ‘5’ on the C-pillar, providing a unique aesthetic, though this feature is absent in the standard 5 Series.
Interior and Features
Inside, the Chinese version of the 5 Series LWB offers a wealth of luxury features, including 4-zone climate control, quilted upholstery, and a dual-tone interior design. A standout feature is the 31.1-inch display that folds down from the headliner, boasting an 8K resolution and 5G compatibility. Paired with the Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, this setup promises an immersive in-car entertainment experience. These features are expected to be included in the India-spec model as well.
Market Position and Competition
The new 5 Series LWB is BMW’s second LWB sedan offering in India, following the successful launch of the 3 Series Grand Limousine a few years ago. This latest model is set to compete with the upcoming E-Class LWB, which is also anticipated to hit the Indian market later this year.
The launch of the BMW 5 Series LWB marks a significant addition to BMW’s luxury sedan lineup in India, promising enhanced comfort and cutting-edge features for discerning customers.
