Yamaha XSR155 launched in India at Rs 1.50 lakh – retro charm meets modern performance

Yamaha XSR155 launched

Yamaha has finally launched the much-anticipated XSR155 in India, priced at Rs 1.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned as the neo-retro sibling to the R15 and MT-15, the new XSR155 combines old-school design with contemporary engineering, offering enthusiasts a stylish yet practical 155cc motorcycle.

Yamaha XSR155: Design and features

The XSR155 stands out from its siblings with its distinct neo-retro styling. It sports a round LED headlamp and tail-lamp, a teardrop-shaped 10-litre fuel tank with “Yamaha” lettering, and a flat, single-piece seat that complements its classic roadster stance. The exposed frame and minimalistic rear further add to its vintage-inspired look.

While the design is retro, the XSR155 doesn’t compromise on modern features. It comes equipped with dual-channel ABS, traction control, and an LCD digital instrument cluster. However, unlike newer Yamaha models such as the FZ-X Hybrid and FZ-S Fi Hybrid, the XSR155 does not get a TFT display.

Engine and performance

Powering the XSR155 is the same 155cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine found in the R15 and MT-15. This VVA-equipped motor produces 18.4hp at 10,000rpm and 14.1Nm at 7,500rpm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The performance-oriented yet efficient engine ensures the XSR155 maintains the spirited character Yamaha’s 155cc platform is known for.

Chassis and dynamics

Underneath its retro exterior lies Yamaha’s renowned Deltabox frame, shared with the R15 and MT-15. Suspension duties are handled by an upside-down (USD) front fork and a rear monoshock, promising sharp handling and stability. The XSR tips the scales at 137kg, which makes it 4kg lighter than the MT-15, contributing to better agility in urban conditions.

That said, the ground clearance of 120mm is notably lower than the MT-15’s, prioritising a lower seat height and a more relaxed riding stance suited for city and highway cruising.

Price, variants and colours

Yamaha is offering the XSR155 in a single variant, priced at Rs 1.50 lakh, making it Rs 5,000 more affordable than the base MT-15. Buyers can choose from four colour optionsBlue, Greyish Green, Red, and Metallic Silver.

Yamaha XSR155: The neo-retro alternative

The new Yamaha XSR155 brings a refreshing blend of classic aesthetics and proven performance to the 150cc segment. It caters to riders who want the heart of the R15 but with a timeless design and more relaxed ergonomics. With its competitive pricing, premium hardware, and retro appeal, the XSR155 stands as an attractive alternative to the MT-15 for those looking to ride with a touch of nostalgia.
