Volvo has taken the wraps off its latest all-electric flagship, the ES90. Positioned as the battery-powered counterpart to the S90 sedan, this cutting-edge EV is the Swedish automaker’s most advanced model to date.
Performance & Range
Built on the SPA2 modular platform, the ES90 follows in the footsteps of the EX90 SUV but raises the bar with an 800V electrical system. This enables ultra-fast 350kW charging, allowing drivers to add 300km of range in just 10 minutes. With a 106kWh battery pack, the ES90 delivers an impressive 700km driving range (WLTP). Volvo has yet to reveal power and torque figures for the electric motors.
Exterior Design
The ES90 carries Volvo’s signature design language, borrowing key elements from the EX90. It features the brand’s iconic ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights, a closed-off grille, and C-shaped tail lamps. The sedan also sports a lidar sensor mounted on the front roof section, similar to models from Lotus and Xiaomi. The side profile closely resembles the S90 plug-in hybrid, apart from an aerodynamically optimized fastback design. Buyers will have a choice of seven exterior colors and wheel sizes ranging from 20 to 22 inches.
Interior & Technology
Inside, the ES90 offers a luxurious, tech-rich cabin centered around a 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 5G connectivity. The system supports over-the-air (OTA) updates, ensuring continuous software improvements. Other standout features include:
✔ 9-inch digital driver’s display
✔ Electrochromic sunroof with UV protection
✔ 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system with Dolby Atmos
✔ 360-degree camera
✔ PM2.5 air purifier
✔ Six-color ambient lighting
Cargo space is also generous, with a 424-liter boot that expands to 733 liters when the rear seats are folded.
Safety & Autonomous Tech
As a software-defined vehicle (SDV), the ES90 is packed with Volvo’s latest safety innovations. It comes equipped with:
🔹 Five radars, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors
🔹 Lidar technology for enhanced driver assistance
🔹 AI-driven safety enhancements
According to Anders Bell, Volvo’s Chief Technology & Engineering Officer, the brand is leveraging data, software, and artificial intelligence to take automotive safety to the next level.
Market Availability & India Prospects
The Volvo ES90 is now available for order in markets such as Germany, the UK, France, and the Czech Republic, with further global expansion planned through 2026. While Volvo has not confirmed an India launch, if introduced, the ES90 would take on the BMW i5, which offers a 516km range and is priced at ₹1.20 crore (ex-showroom).
