Volvo is poised to unveil its first all-electric sedan, the ES90, in March 2025 at a launch event in Stockholm, Sweden. Positioned as the company’s flagship luxury EV, the ES90 represents the next step in Volvo’s commitment to electrification and innovation, joining its expanding lineup of advanced electric vehicles.
A Premium Rival in the EV Space
Designed to compete with the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE, the ES90 builds on the success of the combustion-engine S90 while embracing a fully electric identity. Developed with a strong emphasis on the Chinese market, the ES90 will also be sold globally, underlining Volvo’s ambition to appeal to a broad audience of premium EV buyers.
Shared Foundations with the EX90
The ES90 shares Volvo’s dedicated SPA2 electric platform with the EX90 electric SUV. As a technological flagship rather than a high-volume model, the sedan showcases cutting-edge innovations while setting a benchmark for Volvo’s future EVs.
Styling and Design
Early glimpses of the ES90 reveal a sleek profile reminiscent of the S90 sedan, complemented by design elements from the EX90, such as a closed-off grille, ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights, and vertical rear lights. With a length of 4,999mm and a 3,100mm wheelbase, the ES90 offers a spacious interior designed for comfort and practicality.
Performance and Range
The ES90 will be available in two configurations:
- Single-motor (RWD): Offering an estimated range of up to 600 km on a 111 kWh battery.
- Dual-motor (AWD): Delivering up to 502 hp in the Performance variant, mirroring the powertrain options of the EX90 SUV.
Advanced Technology
Built on Volvo’s state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 integrates hardware and software systems for driving dynamics, infotainment, and autonomous capabilities. Over-the-air (OTA) updates will ensure continuous enhancement of features and performance, while advanced safety systems, including lidar technology, will likely be included.
Expanding Volvo’s Electric Lineup
The ES90 joins Volvo’s growing portfolio of electric vehicles, which includes the EX30, XC40/EX40, C40/EC40, and EX90. Following the ES90’s debut, Volvo plans to launch the EX60—a fully electric successor to the XC60—in 2026, as part of its strategy to boost global EV sales.
More details about the ES90 are expected as its launch approaches, setting the stage for what could be a pivotal model in Volvo’s electric future.
