Volkswagen has unveiled the ID 7 Tourer, marking the German carmaker’s entry into the electric wagon segment. This addition complements the sedan lineup introduced in April last year. Scheduled for release in Europe in the latter half of 2024, the VW ID 7 Tourer will compete with the upcoming BMW i5 Touring and the Audi A6 e-Tron Avant wagons.
Volkswagen ID 7 Tourer: The Electric All-Rounder of the New Era
Designed as a sleek electric estate, the ID 7 Tourer aims to expand the appeal of Volkswagen’s flagship EV. With dimensions of 4,961mm in length, 1,862 mm in width, and 1,536mm in height, it shares proportions with the ID 7 sedan but is shorter, wider, and taller than the next-generation Volkswagen Passat, providing an indirect electric alternative.
Featuring a 545-litre boot, slightly smaller than the BMW i5 Touring’s 570 litres, the ID 7 Tourer offers 1,714 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded. Its aerodynamically optimized styling yields a drag coefficient of 0.24, just 0.1Cd more than the sedan.
Volkswagen ID 7 Tourer: Range and Battery Options
The Tourer will offer two battery options. The Tourer Pro comes with a 77kWh battery capable of charging at speeds of up to 175kW, providing a 10-80 percent charging time of around 28 minutes.
Leading the lineup is the Pro S, equipped with Volkswagen’s larger 86kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of 685km – the longest range of any electric estate on sale. The Pro S can charge slightly quicker, with a maximum speed of 200kW.
Both versions feature Volkswagen’s latest APP550 electric motor, generating 286hp on the rear axle for a 0-100kph time of just under 7.0 seconds. A performance-oriented, four-wheel-drive GTX variant is expected later.
Volkswagen ID 7 Tourer: Interior and Features
Inside, the Tourer boasts the same 15-inch touchscreen infotainment display as the sedan, with significant updates to improve usability, graphics, and processing times. It introduces Volkswagen’s new IDA voice assistant system, offering more ‘human’ and conversational interactions, with an over-the-air update post-launch.
Optional features include an electronically controlled panoramic roof, massage seats, and a Wellness app that adjusts lighting, stereo, and climate control for a calmer environment.
Volkswagen EV Line-up for India
Volkswagen plans to introduce the ID 4 SUV to India, though its launch appears to be delayed. Skoda is also preparing to launch the Enyaq SUV in India in the second half of this year.
