Toyota has introduced the production version of the Urban Cruiser EV, its first electric SUV based on the Maruti eVX concept. Positioned as a counterpart to Suzuki’s e Vitara, the Urban Cruiser EV features distinct styling and dimensions while sharing core components with its Maruti sibling.
Refined Design and Dimensions
The Urban Cruiser EV closely resembles its concept predecessor but with practical refinements. It retains slim LED headlights and a sleek grille, albeit with slightly enlarged proportions for production. The front bumper is less angular, while black cladding along the sides accentuates its SUV identity. Rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar add to its modern look. Buyers can choose between 18-inch or 19-inch aero-optimized wheels, as well as various single- and dual-tone color schemes with contrasting black roofs.
At the rear, the SUV showcases a toned-down version of the concept’s elongated tail-lights, a roof spoiler, and a robust rear bumper. Its dimensions are marginally smaller than the concept, measuring 4,285mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,640mm in height, with a 2,700mm wheelbase. Despite being slightly shorter and narrower than its concept version, it is still slightly larger than the Suzuki e Vitara. Toyota also claims a turning radius of 5.2 meters for the Urban Cruiser EV.
Battery Options and Powertrain
Under the hood, the Urban Cruiser EV shares its skateboard platform, battery packs, and electric motors with the Suzuki e Vitara. Two battery options are available: a 49kWh pack paired with a 144hp, 189Nm front motor, and a 61kWh pack delivering 174hp and 189Nm. For added capability, an AWD version includes a second motor on the rear axle, producing a combined 184hp and 300Nm of torque. This version also features hill-descent control and a “Trail Mode” for off-road support.
Interior and Features
Inside, the Urban Cruiser EV mirrors the e Vitara’s cabin layout, featuring a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Highlights include an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, single-zone automatic climate control, a wireless phone charger, and drive modes. Premium trims offer a JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat adjustments, and a sunroof.
Rear passengers benefit from a sliding and reclining seat configuration with a 40:20:40 split-folding feature. Safety features include a 360-degree camera, six airbags, and an advanced driver-assistance suite with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and pre-collision systems.
India Launch and Global Debut
Toyota plans to debut the Urban Cruiser EV at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show on January 10, with UK pricing to follow in the third quarter of 2025. While no official launch date for India has been announced, the SUV is expected to hit Indian roads later in 2025. Production will take place at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, underscoring its local and global market focus.
The Urban Cruiser EV signals Toyota’s commitment to electric mobility, promising a compelling mix of design, performance, and practicality.
