Toyota has introduced the Supra Final Edition, a track-focused swan song for the iconic A90 Supra, marking the end of its production run. This special edition, unveiled six years after the fifth-generation model’s debut, features a more potent engine, race-inspired styling, and significant mechanical upgrades.
The Legacy of the A90 Supra
The A90 Supra, which premiered in 2019, revived the nameplate after a two-decade hiatus. Co-developed with BMW, it shares its platform with the BMW Z4 and is manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria. The revival of the Supra was a passion project for Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s chairman, who admitted to being a lifelong Supra enthusiast.
Introduced in 1978, the Supra evolved through four generations before being discontinued in 2002 due to stricter emissions regulations. Its 2019 comeback reestablished it as Toyota’s flagship sports car, rekindling its rich motorsport heritage.
Exclusive Styling Enhancements
The Final Edition boasts a dynamic, motorsport-inspired design with standout features, including:
- A carbon-fiber rear wing.
- Aerodynamic canards for improved airflow.
- A functional hood vent hinting at its increased performance potential.
Inside, the cabin is outfitted for the track, with carbon-fiber Recaro bucket seats wrapped in Alcantara – the driver’s seat finished in bold red. Additional accents include carbon-fiber trim, red seatbelts, and other bespoke details that distinguish it from standard models.
Performance and Mechanical Upgrades
Building on the flagship 3.0-litre six-cylinder Supra, the Final Edition gets a power boost to 435hp, eclipsing even the Porsche 911 Carrera in output. This significant gain is achieved through:
- Revised airflow dynamics.
- A new low-back-pressure exhaust catalyst.
- Optimized ECU tuning.
Track-focused refinements include:
- An Akrapovič exhaust system for a richer engine note.
- A re-engineered oil pan with a baffle plate to prevent oil starvation during aggressive driving.
- Enhanced cooling systems.
Chassis improvements are equally noteworthy, incorporating:
- Adjustable KW dampers.
- A reinforced rear subframe derived from the Supra GT4 race car.
- Wider Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires, increasing grip by 10%.
