Toyota has officially announced its intention to introduce a battery-powered version of the Hilux pickup truck by the end of 2025, starting with the Thai market. This confirmation closely follows Isuzu’s unveiling of the D-Max EV (D-MAX BEV) at the Bangkok International Motor Show 2024, with plans to begin manufacturing the electric pickup truck in Thailand by 2025.
Details and Timeline
Noriaki Yamashita, President of Toyota Motor Thailand, indicated that the Hilux EV could be ready by late next year. However, it’s unclear whether production will take place locally or if the vehicles will be imported. Toyota, a dominant player in the Thai market, will conduct trials of approximately a dozen Hilux EV pickup trucks in the tourist town of Pattaya next month, positioning them for potential use in public transportation.
Development History
The Hilux EV was initially showcased as the Hilux Revo BEV concept in December 2022, with a projected production timeline of one year. Detailed technical specifications for the forthcoming Hilux EV, including battery capacity, range, power, torque, and other features, have yet to be disclosed.
Expected Features
Anticipations suggest that the Toyota Hilux EV will offer a standard 4WD system with a dual-battery setup—one for each axle. For comparison, the Isuzu D-Max EV boasts a 66.9kWh battery pack, delivering combined power and torque outputs of 177hp and 325Nm respectively. The Isuzu electric pickup also supports a maximum payload of 1,000kg and a towing capacity of 3,500kg.
In addition to the Hilux, Toyota had previously unveiled an Innova Crysta EV concept in Indonesia, though it has not progressed to production.
