The Indian auto industry has been very busy this year, with a lot of new cars coming out as well as facelifts and other changes. Tata, Hyundai, Honda, and Kia all made big changes to their models this year, including both major and small interior and exterior improvements. Let’s look more closely at the top 10 mass-market cars that got makeovers in 2023.
MG Hector/ Hector Plus
Hector costs between 15 and 22 lakh rupees.
Price range for Hector Plus: Rs 17.80 lakh to Rs 22.73 lakh
There was a midlife update for the MG Hector and MG Hector Plus in January 2023. It was shown off at the Auto Expo 2023. Both models have new features, including advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), and a refreshed front end thanks to the facelift. The MG Hector has a 14-inch tablet infotainment system, a 7-inch fully digital driver’s display, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger, 8-color ambient lighting, and a powered tailgate, among other things. Either SUV comes with up to six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), and a camera that can see in all directions.
The engine choices for the MG Hector and MG Hector Plus have not changed since they were redesigned. You can choose between a 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine with 143 PS and 250 Nm of torque and a 2-liter diesel engine with 170 PS and 350 Nm of torque. Each engine comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, and the turbo-petrol engine also has a CVT automatic transmission.
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
Between Rs 5.84 lakh and Rs 8.51 lakh
In January, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios got a new look. As well as new LED headlights and taillights, the hatchback got sportier bumpers on the front and back ends. It also got new metal wheels on the sides. Only the new fabric and a few extra features were the only major changes to the inside.
Hyundai has added a wireless phone charger, auto AC with rear vents, cruise control, and an 8-inch touchscreen screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to the Grand i10 Nios. There are 6 airbags, hill assist, electronic stability control (ESC), and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for safety.
The Grand i10 Nios has a 1.2-liter gasoline engine that can make 83 PS or 114 Nm of torque. It can be paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT gearbox. It also comes with the choice of CNG, which has the same engine and makes 69 PS and 95 Nm. It can only be bought with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Hyundai Aura
Between Rs. 6.44 lakh and Rs. 9 lakh
A facelift was also given to the Hyundai Aura, which is the sedan form of the Grand i10 Nios, in early 2023. Like the hatchback version, the Aura got the same changes, such as a new front bumper, LED daytime running lights, and an updated rear bumper. The layout of the cabin didn’t change much; new fabric and “Aura” logos on the headrests were the only changes.
There is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in Hyundai’s subcompact car. There is also a wireless phone charger, lighting in the footwells, auto AC, and cruise control. It comes with 6 airbags, hill assist, electronic stability control (ESC), and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) as part of its safety package.
The Aura has the same 1.2-liter gasoline engine as the Grand i10 Nios, which makes 83 PS and 114 Nm of torque. It can be paired with either a 5-speed manual drive or a 5-speed AMT. The small sedan also comes with a CNG engine that makes 69 PS and 95 Nm and only works with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Honda City and City Hybrid
Price range in the city: Rs 11.63 lakh to Rs 16.11 lakh
The price range for the City Hybrid is Rs 18.89 lakh to Rs 20.39 lakh.
In March 2023, Honda made some small changes to the fifth-generation City and City Hybrid. The small car got some small changes to its look, and the inside got new upholstery. The City’s regular gasoline version got a big update with the addition of an advanced driver aid system (ADAS). With the update, the hybrid Honda City also got a new, less expensive mid-spec V spec.
The 2023 Honda City has a single-pane sunroof, a semi-digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, connected car tech, and automatic climate control with rear AC vents. It also has an 8-inch tablet infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Up to 6 airbags, electronic stability control, and a back parking camera make sure that everyone is safe.
The Japanese compact car has two engine choices: a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 121 PS and 145 Nm that can be paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT; and a 1.5-liter gasoline-hybrid engine with 126 PS and 253 Nm of combined power. The Honda City hybrid can only be bought with an e-CVT motor.
Kia Seltos
Price range: 10 to 20 lakh rupees
The Kia Seltos got its first big midlife update in the middle of 2023. It got a new look, a new interior, a lot of new features, and a new turbo-petrol engine option. In terms of style, the new Seltos has a bigger face, all-new headlights, a refreshed bumper, and a new interior.
There are two 10.25-inch touchscreen screens (one for entertainment and one for the driver), dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof in the new Seltos. It has 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a 360-degree camera, and advanced driver aid systems (ADAS) like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and front collision warning.
A 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 115 PS/144 Nm can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT transmission; a 1.5-liter diesel engine with 116 PS/250 Nm can be paired with either a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed iMT transmission; and a 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine with 160 PS/253 Nm can be paired with either a 6-speed iMT transmission or a 7-speed DCT transmission.
Tata Nexon
Between Rs. 8.10 lakh and Rs. 15.50 lakh
Finally, the Tata Nexon got its first big update since it came out. Tata’s updated small SUV has new lights, alloy wheels, and a whole new interior with lots of new features. The front and back of the car have also been redesigned. Tata added two new transmission options to the updated Nexon, but it still has the same engine choices as before.
The 2023 Nexon has a 10.25-inch tablet infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, paddle shifters, and a climate control panel that can be controlled by touch. To keep you safe, it has 6 airbags, an electronic stability program (ESP), a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), hill hold assist, and a camera that can see around corners and show you what you can’t see.
You can still choose between a 1.2-liter turbo-petrol engine (120 PS/ 170 Nm) and a 1.5-liter diesel engine (115 PS/ 260 Nm) in the Tata Nexon. Both engines come with a 6-speed manual transmission, but the first one also has a 5-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, and the second one has an available 6-speed AMT.
Tata Nexon EV
Launch of the facelift: September 2023
Between Rs 14.74 lakh and Rs 19.94 lakh
The Tata Nexon and its electric version, the Nexon EV, both got an update in the middle of their lives. The Nexon EV has a new look inside and out, and its battery pack and range have been improved. There is now only one type with two battery packs. There used to be two, which were called the Nexon EV Prime and Nexon EV Max.
The new Tata Nexon EV has a multimedia system with a 12.3-inch tablet, a digital driver’s display with a 10.25-inch screen, a 9-speaker JBL sound system, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, and a sunroof with a single pane. It has 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera, front parking sensors, and electronic stability control (ESC) to keep you safe.
For the electric Nexon, there are two battery pack options: a 30 kWh battery paired with an electric motor that makes 129 PS/215 Nm and claims to have a range of up to 325 km, and a 40.5 kWh pack paired with an electric motor that makes 144 PS/215 Nm and claims to have a range of up to 465 km.
Hyundai i20 and i20 N Line
The i20 costs between Rs 6.99 lakh and Rs 11.16 lakh.
The price range for the i20 N Line is between Rs. 9.99 lakh and Rs. 12.47 lakh.
The Hyundai i20 and i20 N Line also got a facelift, which included changes to the way they look, new powertrain and transmission choices, and some extra features. The only thing that’s different about the hatchbacks’ interior is the color scheme.
Both hatchbacks come with a 10.25-inch tablet infotainment system, a 7-speaker Bose sound system, a semi-digital driver’s display, a wireless phone charger, and an air purifier. There are six airbags, hill assist control, day-night IRVM, car stability management, and 3-point seatbelts for everyone as standard.
There is now only a 1.2-liter gasoline engine (up to 88 PS/115 Nm) available for the standard i20. It can be paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT gearbox. The hatchback N Line models have a 1-liter turbo-petrol engine with 120 PS and 172 Nm of torque. They are paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission).
Tata Harrier
Rs 15.49 lakh to Rs 26.44 lakh is the price range.
Just a few months after the new Nexon came out, the Tata Harrier got its first big facelift. The Harrier also got new alloy wheels, a refreshed front end, joined LED elements on the front and back, and new features.
Tata has added a 12.3-inch tablet infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, 10-speaker JBL sound system, dual-zone climate control with a touch-based AC panel, and a powered tailgate to the new Harrier. An advanced driver aid system (ADAS) with lane departure warning, auto emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control, as well as up to seven airbags, make sure the safety of the driver and passengers.
Tata’s medium SUV has the same 2-liter diesel engine that was used before. It makes 170 PS and 350 Nm and can be paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission.
Tata Safari
Between Rs. 16.19 lakh and Rs. 27.34 lakh in price
The Tata Safari and its 5-seater sister, the Harrier, both got new looks. Almost all of the changes made to the new Safari are also made to the Tata Harrier.
There is a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, a 10-speaker JBL sound system, and wireless phone charging in the new Safari. The infotainment system has a 12.3-inch tablet and supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It comes with up to seven airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill assist, a camera that can see in all directions, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
The Safari has the same 2-liter diesel engine as the Harrier. It has 170 PS and 350 Nm of power and can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
