India’s top 10 bestselling scooters collectively recorded 46,51,718 units in sales between April and December 2024, securing a 31% share of total scooter sales. This marks a notable rise from 28% last year, with an additional 7,93,934 units sold. A key highlight of this year’s rankings is the growing presence of electric scooters, with the TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak making it to the Top 10.
Electric Scooters Gain Ground: TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak Shine
The demand for electric scooters continues to gain momentum, reflected in the strong double-digit growth of both TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak.
- TVS iQube retained its No. 6 position, selling 1,97,534 units, up 37% year-on-year (YoY) from 1,44,126 units in the same period last year.
- Bajaj Chetak, at No. 7, surged into the Top 10 after missing out last year. It recorded 1,88,765 units, marking a remarkable 48% YoY growth from 75,999 units in April-December 2023.
Together, these two electric models accounted for 3,86,299 units, capturing 2.56% of total scooter sales and a significant 8.30% share of the Top 10 rankings.
Honda Activa Leads, TVS Jupiter and Suzuki Access Drive Growth
At the top of the list, Honda Activa remains India’s best-selling scooter, with an impressive 1.99 million units sold, marking a 15% YoY increase. The Activa alone commands a 13% market share, underscoring its dominance.
Despite its strong performance, the TVS Jupiter, ranked No. 2, remains far behind, selling 7,90,028 units—a 26% YoY growth but still trailing the Activa by a massive 1.20 million units. However, the Jupiter crossed a significant milestone this fiscal year, surpassing 7 million units in cumulative sales since its launch in September 2013. At Auto Expo 2025, TVS unveiled the Jupiter CNG, the world’s first CNG-powered scooter, signaling its intent to innovate.
The Suzuki Access 125, India’s top-selling 125cc scooter, ranked No. 3 with 5,47,470 units, registering an 18% YoY increase and securing a 3.64% market share. With Honda and Suzuki now entering the EV space, the competitive landscape is set for further evolution.
The Mid-Pack: TVS NTorq, Honda Dio, and Suzuki Burgman
- TVS NTorq 125 (No. 4) sold 2,67,679 units, though its 6% YoY growth was the slowest among the Top 10, suggesting a potential slowdown in demand.
- Honda Dio (No. 5) saw a 33% YoY jump with 2,63,479 units, closing in on the NTorq, with just a 4,200-unit difference between them.
- Suzuki Burgman (No. 8) recorded 1,61,215 units, reflecting a 27% YoY growth and reinforcing Suzuki’s growing footprint in the segment.
Rounding Out the Top 10: Yamaha RayZR and Hero Pleasure
- Yamaha RayZR Hybrid secured the No. 9 spot with 1,35,410 units, up 20% YoY.
- Hero Pleasure, however, struggled, ranking No. 10 with 1,10,101 units, down 3.56% from 1,14,173 units last year.
The Shift Towards 125cc Scooters
A deeper look at the Top 10 rankings highlights an industry shift—seven of the eight petrol-powered models are either 125cc scooters or variants of a 110cc sibling. This indicates a clear trend of consumers transitioning from 100-110cc models to more powerful 125cc scooters.
As electric scooters gain traction and manufacturers introduce innovative solutions like CNG-powered models, the Indian scooter market is evolving rapidly, setting the stage for a dynamic future.
