India’s Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs: April-October 2024

Top 10 Best-Selling SUV

The utility vehicle (UV) segment, encompassing SUVs and MPVs, has been a key driver for the Indian passenger vehicle market in FY2025. Despite overall industry growth slowing to 1% year-on-year (YoY), the UV segment has maintained its momentum, growing 13% YoY to 15.6 lakh units. This surge has boosted the segment’s market share from 57% last year to a commanding 65% between April and October 2024.

Here’s a look at the top 10 SUVs that have dominated the sales charts during this period:

1. Tata Punch

Sales: 1,17,560 units (+34% YoY)
The Tata Punch has surged ahead as India’s best-selling SUV, overtaking even its sibling, the Nexon. It holds a 48% share of Tata Motors’ SUV sales and crossed the 4-lakh-unit milestone in just 33 months, a record for SUVs in India.

2. Hyundai Creta

Sales: 1,13,913 units (+18% YoY)
The Creta remains India’s best-selling midsize SUV, achieving a milestone of 1 lakh units in just six months—half the time taken by its rival, the Maruti Grand Vitara. It is a significant contributor to Hyundai’s UV sales, with a 47% share.

The Fronx, based on the Baleno, has quickly gained popularity, surpassing 2 lakh units in just 17 months. It accounts for 22% of Maruti’s UV sales and outpaces its sibling, the Grand Vitara.

6. Tata Nexon

Sales: 87,109 units (-9% YoY)
Once India’s top SUV, the Nexon is facing challenges from both competitors and its stablemate, the Punch. However, its diverse range of petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric variants keeps it relevant in the market.

7. Maruti Grand Vitara

Maruti’s flagship midsize SUV continues to attract buyers with its hybrid technology and premium features, although competition in the segment has slightly impacted its sales momentum.

8. Hyundai Venue

The Venue, a compact SUV pioneer, has seen a decline in sales due to the rising popularity of Hyundai’s Exter. However, it remains a solid performer, crossing 6 lakh cumulative units in India.

9. Kia Sonet

Sales: 64,716 units (+42% YoY)
The Sonet, boosted by a facelift earlier this year, has emerged as Kia’s best-selling model. Packed with features and ADAS capabilities, it has consistently outsold its sibling, the Seltos.

Sales: 60,063 units (+73% YoY)
The refreshed XUV300, now known as the XUV3XO, has delivered a remarkable 73% YoY growth, highlighting the success of its revamped design and features.

Compact SUVs Dominate the Market

Compact SUVs (under 4 meters in length) continue to lead the UV market, accounting for 51% of total UV sales (7,96,575 units) and maintaining a stronghold over midsize SUVs. The top 10 SUVs alone contributed 8,78,071 units (up 16% YoY), with compact models making up 68% of this total.

As the demand for compact and feature-rich SUVs remains strong, this segment is expected to drive the Indian automotive market further into FY2025.
