The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has raised toll charges on national highways and expressways by 4-5%, effective April 1. This annual revision is based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation and follows the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
Widespread Impact on Over 850 Toll Plazas
The latest toll adjustment affects approximately 855 toll plazas across India, including 675 operated through public funding and 180 managed by private contractors. Key routes impacted by the revised toll rates include the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, NH-9, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and Delhi-Jaipur Highway, among others. Notably, this is the second toll hike within a year, following a previous increase in June 2024.
Toll Revenue to Support Infrastructure Development
Officials have emphasized that the increase aligns with routine annual adjustments and varies across different highway sections. The additional revenue generated will be allocated to highway maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and ongoing expansion projects, ensuring better road networks for commuters.
