During its Futurescape event in South Africa on Independence Day 2023, Mahindra unveiled the Vision Thar.e concept, an exciting new electric version of the popular Thar SUV. Unlike its traditional 3-door sibling with an internal combustion engine (ICE), the Vision Thar.e is a 5-door variant with distinctive design elements. Let’s explore its features in detail:
Front
The Vision Thar.e showcases an upright stance with a broad front profile and angled sections. The lower portion boasts a sizable bumper and a blacked-out skid plate, housing Mahindra’s fresh EV logo and a sturdy tow hook. At the center, a gloss black element proudly displays the illuminated “Thar.e” logo, flanked by three LED lights. Square-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) surround the headlamps, adding to the unique appeal.
Side
The side view reveals the SUV’s elongated silhouette with sharp geometric cuts and impressive ground clearance. The A-pillar is elegantly blacked-out and extends downward as a prominent black strip, tastefully featuring the “Thar.e” logo. Interestingly, this strip serves as the mounting location for the rearview cameras, which replace the traditional side mirrors. The front door is flat, boasting a subtle downward kink and a vertical door handle.
The rear door design gracefully protrudes to match the rear track width, with its handle positioned on the C-pillar. Notably, the wheel arches are crisply defined, and the rugged alloy wheels sport a stylish dual-tone black and gray finish, wrapped in robust all-terrain tires.
Towards the rear, a distinctive three-quarter glass seamlessly integrates with a mesh-like design.
Rear
The upper rear section is dominated by a generously proportioned rear windscreen, flanked by LED lights on both sides. Just beneath, you’ll find the rear-mounted spare wheel and a similar bumper and skid plate setup as the front.
As a nod to the front design, the rear profile also features square-shaped light elements around the tail lamps.
Roof
Although a sunroof is absent from this concept, the Vision Thar.e boasts a semi-glass roof with divided glass panels, separated by a substantial black strip running through the middle.
Cabin
Stepping inside, the cabin showcases a layered design with an appealing gray and bronze color scheme. Eye-catching bronze slits span the width of the dashboard, creating a distinctive visual element.
The dashboard accommodates a sizable floating touchscreen display, positioned above climate control buttons for convenience. The square-shaped steering wheel incorporates the “Thar.e” logo at its center and features backlit buttons on the sides.
Positioned behind the steering wheel, a floating digital driver’s display provides essential information. Notably, the front cabin is divided by a lengthy center console, housing a cockpit-style gear lever and controls for drive modes.
Additionally, a wide center armrest enhances comfort. The rear of the cabin offers a bench seat in a refreshing green hue, featuring square design elements. Interestingly, the headrests are cleverly mounted on the roof, adding a touch of innovation.
While a production-ready model of the Thar EV is anticipated to be unveiled around 2026, the launch is expected to follow thereafter. Upon entry into the market, the vehicle could be priced at approximately Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). It is likely to feature an all-wheel-drive electric powertrain and an estimated range of 400 km, making it an attractive proposition for electric SUV enthusiasts.
