Tata Nexon Achieves 5-Star Safety Rating in BNCAP Crash Tests

Tata Nexon Achieves 5-Star Safety Rating in BNCAP Crash Tests

In a significant milestone for vehicle safety, the Tata Nexon has been awarded a 5-star rating by the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP). This recognition applies to both adult and child occupant protection, showcasing the compact SUV’s robust safety features. The rating is applicable to both petrol- and diesel-powered variants of the Nexon, following its electric version, which also received a 5-star rating earlier in May.

The model tested in BNCAP’s crash evaluations was the Fearless Diesel AMT variant. However, consistent with standard NCAP testing protocols, allowances were made for other variants in terms of weight and design, ensuring that the high safety score extends across the entire range. The Nexon achieved an impressive 29.41 out of a possible 32 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), with crash test dummies showing “good” or “adequate” ratings across all key body regions measured in the crash scenarios.

For Child Occupant Protection (COP), the Nexon scored 43.83 out of a maximum 49 points, only slightly lower than the electric version, which had scored 29.86 for AOP and 44.95 for COP. These ratings underscore the vehicle’s ability to safeguard passengers of all ages.

A Step Forward in Indian Auto Safety Standards

The BNCAP program, designed to elevate the safety standards of vehicles on Indian roads, was launched in December last year. Tata’s Harrier and Safari models were among the first to be tested, both securing 5-star ratings. BNCAP’s testing protocol closely mirrors that of the Global NCAP (GNCAP), with the primary difference being a maximum score of 32 points under BNCAP, compared to 34 points in GNCAP. This variance is due to the extra points GNCAP awards for the presence of seat belt reminders—half a point for each of the front seats and one point for the rear seat.

With its latest BNCAP rating, the Tata Nexon continues to set a high standard for safety in the Indian automotive market, reinforcing its reputation as one of the safest compact SUVs available today.
